Weird... Water/meth is used to decrease detonation in gas engines. Odd how things change when you double the CR. ;)
thats because it lowers the temps inside combustion chamber on gas.
it also does that on diesels, but there is no spark for detonation. It relies on compression which gets changed with the mixture

    Yeah I get it now.....:):

Scrap yard engine swap and a trad in unless the trade value is stupid low and this is wasting time.
If you get a good one (change the belt 1st) you can buy some time. You did this with your truck.

That’s the plan. Engine swap it and by us a couple years. Truck is still going strong. The truck actually took the whole family to Destin and back last week. It made the whole trip without complaining one bit.

$1500 is fair depending on center section being provided. An open carrier is $90, a locker... well... up to you how much you want to spend. I was quoted $900 to do the front in my Jeep, with it out of the vehicle, with a factory replacement open carrier, about 5 years back.

Ended up doing it myself with a hodge-podge of used and new parts that ultimately aren't going to end up saving me any money at all. I did what I could afford at the time, so, is what it is now.

Seeing what I just said... If that's all you can really afford to do, then I get it. But I think that plan is likely to cost you a bunch of money and a bunch of time that is all going to end up down the drain sooner than it would if you put it somewhere else. I have a PhD in Gambler's Fallacy when it comes to my vehicles and I've almost never placed a good bet other than the time I cut bait and moved on.

If this was a RWD regular vehicle, sure, slam a JY engine it and do whatever. FWD minivan, with a healthy dose of Chrysler? Hard pass, IMHO...

Yeah maybe. Time will tell. It is what it is at this point. Like was said earlier, anything in the $7000-$8000 range is going to have near or well over 100k miles on it anyway. Might as well just spend a grand or whatever and have basically the same thing for significantly cheaper. If it’ll last me a few more years, then it’s worth it. Going to put a new timing belt and water pump on the “new” engine while everything is out and easily accessible.

If you have the ability, pop a valve cover off. It'll tell a lot about previous maintenance.

Edit: I should clarify that I was talking about before purchase

I would have never dreamed that you'd get a replacement engine installed for a grand. I was guessing at least double that just for installation. Have I got it all screwed up?

Before purchase, I'd want to see it running in an assembled vehicle too. Just taking one off of the bone pile for the family truckster is a bit too bold for my taste.

A shop in Franklin wanted almost 4 grand just to put in a used engine. I think it was closer to 5 or 6 grand for a reman.
