Hello all. I live in south central Indiana. I'm wanting to shoot outdoors on some land I have access to. I was curious what laws there are for outdoor shooting.

Supposedly there is a new state law, that if you are within city limits and the population is a certain size, it is illegal. Love how I only found this out because of a judge telling me.

Talk to the Sheriff of the county where you have the property.

If you live in the limits of a city or town, check with the local PD about any ordinances they may have.

Most towns and cities have their own ordinances in place already.

I actually just called my local sheriff's office. I got ahold of the first person who was records and she couldn't help and transferred me to dispatch and they couldn't help me and said they'd have to send an officer to talk to me. I asked if I could just talk to someone on the phone and they said they didn't do that because of Covid. Lol. What? You'll send someone to talk to me face to face, but not over the phone because of Covid? How does that make any sense.

If you are out of city limits, your first concern is that all the bullets you shoot stay on that property. No guessing, no accidentals, no ricochets.

Covid is the new boogey man.
Don't know what to blame something on, blame it on Covid

I would love to, cannot find it though. Maybe the judge was mistaken or talking about something that is still yet to pass or failed to pass. At the time he said it was going to be a new law, but that was almost a year ago. I looked for several hours, trying to find anything about it.

Please tell me you didnt get a fine, etc? If so, hire a lawyer because you got railroaded.

IANAL but Im pretty sure you cant get in trouble for something that isnt yet illegal. E.g. if its illegal to drink beer on the sidewalk while wearing an ugly Christmas sweater starting 1/1/2021, you cant get in trouble for it today. (or vice versa, if said law expires 12/31/2020, you cant get in trouble for doing it after 1/1/2021)

And if he is gonna bust you on it, he had better be able to cite chapter and verse as to why you need your pee pee whacked. Pretty sure the prosecutor and judge reference those specifically during hearings.

But if he just rattled that off and "let you off with a stern warning" he was just covering for his LEO buddy's ineptitude and didnt want to make him look like an ass for dragging you into court for absolutely no reason.
