This topic is going too well.

We need to argue over whether .30-30 is better than .35 Rem or vice versa.

    Commence!
35 rem gets my vote but 30 30 ammo much more widely available. Personally I own a 44 mag and 357 mag and love them.

Currently, I'm looking at maybe buying a second lever gun.. this time in 3030 since it's purpose will be the hog hunt my friends and I are going to go on. I'm not sure my 44 mag is up to the task.

I have some experience with a Winchester 30-30 years ago.
We had big black boar and their skulls were pretty thick. The 1911 45 would usually graze off with head shots unless you were closer and hit it square dead on. (which is too close)

The 30-30 would dig in at all different angles even at longer distances if you had open areas. It also went through twigs and crap without deflecting better than some other calibers.

My favorite was still the short barreled pistol grip 12 gauge pump with slugs and some 00 buck in my pocket just because.
It was compact and just handled better in the bush. Plus it was easier to manipulate one handed when you got treed. We didn't have very many open fields.

So where are you going and what's legal there?

I've seen that helicopter pig hunting looks kinda fun too. :D

The plan is Texas for the dest. Haven't figured out exactly where yet.

The hunting from a helicopter sounds fun, I'm just worried my marksmenship isn't up to snuff enough for that.

Marlin 336 in either 30-30 or 35 Remington are good lever guns. 32 Winchester Special in the Model 94 is a less known but still great lever gun cartridge.

I have a new Winchester on it's way.
With that said, I have heard that people don't like the new ones but I never heard why. Are they buying Chinese parts or quality control has dropped off? Also when did this happen? When did they make the last good Winchester?
    :dunno:

Yes I know it's a picture thread and when I get my rifle, I will post it. ;)

Winchester collectors will put this date at 1964. The value of the guns is reflected in this, almost any Winchester product made before 1964 will be higher valued than the same one made after 1964.

Any cartridge that will cleanly kill a deer will cleanly kill hogs. They are not as tough as a lot of people purport them to be BUT the vitals are situated higher and farther forward than in a deer. If you shoot a hog low and slightly back with nearly any cartridge you will probably not find it. The only real* reason to get a new rifle would be to get one that's capable of attaining velocities of 2500+ FPS, which would make the neck shot more viable.

*Note just wanting a new rifle is a real, valid reason to buy one but for the sake of this conversation I will assume that is not your primary motivation.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of 3030. Y'all may make fun of me and that fine. But I'm don't owning guns that hurt me when fired. Guns are supposed to inflict pain on "not me". So the 3030 is a bit rough in the shoulder for my tastes. It's the same reason I plan on selling my 12 gauge Mossberg 500. I want something more comfortable to shoot. So if the 44 mag will out a hog down no prob. I'll probably just stick with that..... though it is lonely being the only lever gun in the safe.

My boy cleanly took a Buck this youth season with a 357 Magnum lever gun. Used 158 grain soft point PMC bullets. It went through both shoulders the deer dropped and didn't take another step. So don't let them fool you as long as you stay within 50 yards or so even a 357 Magnum which kicks less than a 44 magnum what do the job

Seems like it probably needs a companion in .22 LR. That will put squirrels down, and it is always pleasant to shoot.

Well with regard to the 30-30. You are right it does kick, and after about 6 shots the shoulder does feel it. You all can make fun of me as well, but I wear a recoil pad or what some call "sissy pad" made by Allen on my shoulder when I shoot the big stuff at the range. Makes a difference to me. The older I get the less I enjoy abusing my shoulder when I shoot. Just my :twocents:

You'll never catch me making fun of you. I've never enjoyed hard-recoiling rifles, even as a young man. I can handle it, just don't enjoy it, and I mostly shoot for enjoyment. I know some will argue 30-30 is not hard recoiling, and that's true, relatively speaking. But I much prefer my 22 Hornets or 357 carbines. For longer ranges, .243 is about the most I enjoy and can shoot well. Most of my rifles wear a Pachmayr Decelerator slip-on pad, regardless of caliber, because I like a longer length of pull.

Picked this one up around the end of March this year. Marlin 336 chambered in 35 Rem. I changed the scope mount but right now it has open sights. Haven't shot this one a lot.
