I'll be cancelling my account on Monday and letting them know why.

Edit: They have a 110% refund policy, so I'll be getting more than my money back. Heh. Heh. Heh...

This may just have come at an opportune time to give them an excuse to back out of the deal and win some PC mojo?

The thought occurred to me. They've been struggling for awhile now trying to learn how to make money selling something that other people give away for free. They keep dropping their price, but their competition is mostly free so competing on price alone isn't going to win the day. Their strength is the quality of the product in terms of verifying and the like, but how many people are convinced that its worth it to pay them for that and how do you convince more people that it is? I'm sure they've got some smart folks on it, but that's a tough row to hoe.

Angie's list has been in trouble; I reckon this was a good opportunity.

I'm one if those people that doesn't really think the law was a good idea (because I think the Repubs passed it for their own political gain before they knew how unpopular it would be), but I am more annoyed by the misinformation outrage.

so I'm glad you gave me the idea to cancel my membership. I haven't been using it much lately anyway

    Could be anywhere
I'm thinking Angie has made enough money off everyone else and can do what she wants...care about the workers? Who are those ants down there anyway. She's a lib so I'm sure she's comforted that the government will provide a safety net.

Don't know 'Angie' don't use Angie's List, don't care about Angie's List, and wouldn't recommend Angie's List. 'Expansion' into what, more poor business ideas that don't work?

Maybe their 'new expansion plan' should include learning how to run a business.

Please let us know how it goes; I've heard cancelling your account with AL is not easy.

My neighbor found a roofing contractor on AL. The contractor told him he would give him a better price if he paid him direct instead of paying through AL. Maybe practices like this is part of Angie's problem.

I am so tired of hearing about how these companies are going to come to the state and employ X number of people. We have companies that have come to our area, gotten huge tax abatements based on promises to hire a certain number of people within the first year or two. Five or more years later, they have hired maybe a third of that original number promised and are still benefiting from those tax abatements. So this big threat of retaliation is that they were going to expand and hire 1,000 people...yeah, right. I don't believe it was ever a plan in the first place but it sure feeds into the media hype.

I have zero sympathy for this company considering they started looking for this expansion only a few months after a ton of layoffs. Don't let the door hit ya on yer ass on the way out Angie...

Used Angie's list a few years back for hail damage repair, picked the #1 rated guys.... They were a bit more pricey ~15%, coming in 1k over the insurance estimates, but with the amount of stuff to be fixed I figured I would pay an extra $1,000 than hassle with multiple different companies. Worst. Decision. Ever. They were a nightmare, wouldn't fix ****, didn't fix anything right (except the roof, but that evidently was subcontracted out), and were put to utter shame by the 'fly by night' crews who came in from all over the country in terms of price, timeliness and quality. AL did nothing to help and wouldn't even let us leave negative feedback, as it was repeatedly questioned and we were accused of try to defame a good company - blah blah blah. Now, I think I'll go and add angie's list.com to my firewall block list and as an added bonus I think I'll contact my state senator about claw-backs for any tax abatement they may have received.

Agree with the above - this smacks of opportunistically blaming something on politics when in reality it's a failure of your business model.

Short the daylights out of the company. If this were back in the first dot com bust - this company would be on "screwed"company.com

Their idiot CEO was on TV saying how now they can't guarantee they can fill those 1000s of jobs due to the new business climate in Indiana! BULLCRAP! They can't fill those jobs because they don't have a viable business and so don't have any money to pay for this so-called talent they need.

This company is in a death-spiral already. If they are so serious about how bad things are in Indiana, they really should be packing up and moving out of state NOW!

Actually, the whole idea that Angiest List is broke is a huge fallacy. I know current and former people over there. They are far from broke. They don't post a profit because every dollar gets reinvested into marketing to increase the user base. When they turn off marketing, the place prints money.

The simpletons assume that if a company doesn't post a profit, they must be broke!

That said, it's still a shady company that preys on the elderly who have a harder time canceling their account and forcing people who want to cancel to mail in a letter.
