Just out of curiosity, how much "umph" does a 45acp have left at 200 yds?

Enough to pass through the exterior wall of a framed house and kill a man inside, apparently.

    LINK

And I was wrong -- it was over 300 yards.

Though this article did not detail it, others at the time indicated that the trees between the properties were highly marked up with many prior rounds fired by this gunsmith in the direction of his neighbor's home, indicated that he did not always fire them into the ground as he claimed.

Only one needs to make it through.

Based on some of the logic in this thread, we should just dispense with firearms season completely. It's just too dangerous. Oh and Indiana should go ahead ban HPRs while we're at it.
Jeez guys, a lot of these arguments are nearly identical to those used by the anti-gun folks. Isn't this a gun owner's site?

I am still on the fence on this one. I would like to shoot a deer with one of my Mosins but not sure I trust some of the crazy neighbors I have. Longer shots will happen thats just part of the game.

    Hoo boy!

Reading all the naysayers to this proposed change is like going to Bizarro World.
The condescension, the Chicken Littleism, the refusal to acknowledge neighboring states with similar populations and geography that allow HPRs for deer, all of it is perplexing.
Those aren't the words or mentality of dedicated gun owners and hunters; those are the propaganda of the hoplophobes.
Somewhere in the Great Beyond, Jeff Cooper's spirit is doing a facepalm.
It's as if PETA and every anti-gun group in existence (including Bloomturd's puppet, Shannon Watts) had signed up on INGO to spam their agenda on here.
Hell, even my own brother, who himself has a nice sporterized Enfield SMLE chambered in .30-06, has expressed his own reluctance to agree that HPRs are a good idea!
    Seriously, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

Yep its a gun owners site, some just want to be safer than others. Everyone is raised different, some trusting of others, some not. I personally don't care if the new law passes, been killing deer for years with a shotgun and don't need anything else. I sit back and wait for it to happen and wait on all the griping about "so n so almost shot me" or "lots of wounded deer" or "fill in the blank" . the world is never happy nor will be. Can't please everyone just roll with it, deal with it or whine about it. Either way it is what it is.

My old area was a zoo under the current regs (always has been).

Rifles I think will make it worse.

Might not in other spots. Again, only an Obamaphile thinks of "win win".

For every win there is a loss (loser). Just what the costs will be? My guess is that it will be varied in location and type.

Weekend warriors hunting decent sized family ground might have never experienced "other people". That doesn't mean they won't sooner or later. The public is stupid. Rifle or shotgun license doesn't change it.

I know plenty of guys who could use any rifle and never pose a danger to others.
Selling guns proved to me that these folks are unfortunately the minority.

Having hunted good ground and had bullets fly by on several occasions..............yeah, bring on the rifles.

Already got farmers cruising for the bruisers with rifle in bow (yote hunting dontcha know- big open NWI spot)..............had a truck rip through the neighboring field and guys get out sending lead at a 165 class from way out (shotguns, gun season).................hell I saw a utlility van with bucket up, shotgunner up top, cruising the neighbor's field one day........................they're out there. Give 'em rifles.

I'll run my Contender even if the regs change. Works fine.

I am confused by your stance on this, you say it's terrible to use HPR's in Indiana because idiots are going to shoot everybody, but then you are fine with a HPR cartridge in a pistol platform. I don't really care what happens either way, if it passes I will take my rifle out, if not, I will stick with my shotgun. I don't see anymore hunting accidents happening simply because of different calibers being allowed.

My suspicion is that many of the naysayers (but not all) don't have HPR's chambered in decent deer cartridges, having instead invested quite a lot in what is currently legal instead, and they don't like it that there will be others now hunting with what will be arguably superior equipment.
Probably the majority of the rest of them are just typical curmudgeons who aren't happy about change of any kind.

There are a couple people that keep posting on this topic. I can't tell if they are for it or against it because they will post that they are in one post then later post in a way that would make you think that they are not. I have posted a couple times myself. Always support it and not swayed in both directions.

Nope...I simply don't think it is needed, we already have quite a few more than needed rounds available for harvesting...no need to include HPRs. I do agree though that we either need to allow them or remove same caliber pistols from being legal. Like I've stated though I view this as inevidable so don't plan on fighting it either way. Besides...my bow suits me just fine :)
