Had the chance to attend Mindset Lab's 4 hour "Defeating Locks" class this morning. I had never thought much about defeating locks and found this quick class to be very interesting and full of good information. Shay was joined by pro locksmith Ben who assisted with the class. Lots of hands on time with various locks and good use of visuals and animated graphics to show us how locks operate and how to defeat them. We also spent time discussing making our own tools in a pinch out of common items found in areas from your desk drawer to an auto parts shop dumpster.

At $50 this is a no brainer and you pick up the basics of a new skill that could come in very handy. Next one is in August. I might show up again for more practice. Thanks Shay!

I pick locks all the time at work, but have a lot of trouble with "real" locks. I might have to do that class. Can I bring my own picks?

Very cool! I have picks and have been teaching myself, but an actual hands-on class would be perfect! Definitely looking into this.

Serious question. What am I missing here? School me on why I need to know how to pick locks. I don't know what I don't know on this subject matter.

    Because of this:

Very handy skills to have when you lose the key to your safe and the battery is dead. :):

It actually happened to me and know I need a INGOer with lockpicking skills to help me! :faint:

There've been legitimate times where I've needed to get access to something where nobody knew where the keys to the lock were. For very simple locks (like desks and filing cabinets) I've had some success -- mostly luck :D -- getting them open with a couple of paper clips. For $50 though...this could be a handy skill to obtain.

No, thats my point. Other than dead batteries on my safe why should I know how to do this? I am not criticizing the class, I like to know as much as I can if there is a good reason for this knowledge I am all about it.

For many people it's just a hobby. They buy locks and try to pick them.
But you could have lots of use for those skills.
I already got locked out of my house a few times.:faint:

I'm thinking a spare key, hidden in a strategic location, would be a simpler solution. :):

You might need lock picking skills during the zombie apocalypse. What if there's a cache of food stuck behind a locked pantry door?

Because it may help you get access to places or things that may otherwise be inaccessible.
