Yep. That was my biggest complaint about moving up here... NO place to shoot!
We need a world class indoor range in Indy!

I'd opt for more outdoor ranges, I can't stand shooting indoors. I also wish there were more rifle/shotgun ranges, and not the places where you're forced to shoot trap or skeet.

I shoot at Jasper-Pulaski. Free and they have a 25, 50, 100, 225, and a shotgun range. It's free. All you have to do is sign in. Great outdoor range and a couple good old rangemasters.

Cool link. Notice not a damn thing in Bloomington :noway:

There was. I was a member.
One of the nicest ranges I've seen.
But IU decided we shouldn't be there with our evil scary guns and shut us down.

I WAS a big IU fan, but screw 'em now. And Myles Brand can burn in hell (but that's probably a given).

I took a 2 day fighting pistol class there a couple of years ago and it was nice. But I have never showed up there just for some target practice.

I've heard good things about the Eagle Creek Pistol Range. I have never been there myself. Has anyone been there recently?

(Club/range in Bloomington that IU ran out)

The club was the Sycamore Valley Gun Club, which still exists. We (Well..."they", rather than "we", since I let my membership run out last year) bought some land near Freedom a few years later and started up again. It's nice there, but I don't think it compares to what we had.

To get to the old range range at Bloomington:
Take 45/46 to 10th St, turn east.
Maybe a block down 10th, just past some industrial looking buildings and right before some apartments, is Range Rd. Turn left/north on it.
Go back a long way. Past the IU trap and skeet range (if it's still there). There was a gate just past the trap range, and probably still is. If not, maybe you can get back there, but it's at your own risk (the road never was that great and gets steep with a sharp turn).

I've heard it was a gravel pit at one time. Makes sense. It's down in a"bowl" of sorts. Great place for a range, being a wall of earth on all sides.
Mature trees. It looked like a state park. Beautiful.

The club had been there for over 40 years, maybe more. The land belonged to IU, but IU and the club had an agreement going back to 1940s or so: IU allowed the use of the land and the club provided the buildings, facilities, and upkeep. IU got it's land maintained, the club got a range, IU students could have free memberships, and the local, county, and campus LE agencies got a place to train. The club had built a clubhouse, indoor range (it was the old clubhouse), and of course the ranges.

But in the late 90's Myles Brand and others on the IU board decided they didn't want IU connected with an evil gun club and threw us out.
The reason given was that they wanted to expand the IU golf course, and there was also talk of a park. The golf course made more sense since the range and IU golf course were adjoining, or close to it if not. But it's not like there aren't any golf courses in Bloomington. I can't think of a town north of Florida with more golf courses.
The park talk was pure craziness. Besides the fact it wasn't the most accessible location, there is another issue that effects any use of that land, especially for a park:
    LEAD.
With 50 years of lead in the ground, I can't imagine what it would cost to clean up. If it even COULD be cleaned up.

It was best being used for what it was.

But I'm sure the real truth is that having IU connected with a gun club in any way, shape, or form was keeping board members up at night with cold sweats.
So, after a weak fight (not much you can do in that case, in that town), we were gone. I think IU was forced to give us some money for the structures, and promised to help relocate us.
We didn't get much money and a lot less relocation help.
