It's my intention to collect hand guns. I don't have much now, but it seems with each new gun I get, the more I want. I currently do not have a 1911.

I have done some research on various 1911s. I am looking a commander size 45ACP version. I really like the S&W E-Series 1911. I have not fired one, but I have held a couple.

If you have any experience with this pistol, would you please post your comments. Positive or negative.

    Thanks.

Still don't know why the heck the went with an external extractor. If it wasn't for that, I'd buy one.

I love mine. It is easy to carry and easy to shoot. I will probably shoot it at FNS on friday. If you are going you can shoot it before the match. Just send me a pm

The external extractor isn't worse from a function standpoint. It's just an ugly thing to have on a 1911, and the 1911 purists will vomit in their mouths a bit.

And that smith is such a nice looking piece. The external extractor really just looks like a big turd sitting on the side of it.

I was in Tx., in 2004, and went to an indoor range, and rented a S&W 1911, guessing, it was too early for an E series, but I put probably 2-400 rounds through that gun..... I want one....

Got mine back in early January and have only put 100 rounds thru it. When I started my search, I had a max budget of $2,000, but really wanted to stay under $1,500. Was looking at the Kimbers, but after seeing this and reading a couple reviews, I started looking at it closer and closer. Made 3 trips up to the Indiana Gun Club, and always came back to this gun. I was carrying an XDm 9 or 45, and this is smaller than the XDm (but not by much). It is a great looking gun, shoots well and you can't go wrong with a S&W. -- Greg

I was in PSS in December looking at a Stainless "E" series and a SA Stainless loaded. The price was close enough as not to matter between the 2.
What mattered was in a side by side comparison to fit and finish the Loaded Springer won hands down. Trigger was a bit mushy on the S&W compared to the Springer and The external extractor was an eyesore IMHO.
    I bought the loaded.

I am a huge S&W fan. I have a 1911PD caspian frame railed offering and it is a really great gun. One of my favorites.
I will need to do some range time behind an "E" before I reconsider.

This is only my personal opinion of the "E" and again, no knock on a great Marque.

maybe if it was stainless like the rest of the slide it would blend in more?

ok, something positive about the external extractor. let me start off with the problem. some people do not like to leave their gun chambered when not on their hip. so you unload your gun. that leaves you with two options to load it everyday.
the problem with that is that repeated chambering of the same round can cause bullet setback which i've read can be a real problem. the only other option normally is to put a round in the chamber and slam the slide shut on it. also not advisable since that can damager the extractor. not how the gun was designed to function.

problem solved with the external extractor...you put the round in the camber and ease the slide shut. the breech will not close all of the way because the extractor will be resting on the back side of the round. you then push on the back side of the extractor allowing it to pivot to the side, sliding it around the loaded round. and voala!

had a gkk45 once and it worked that way. now i'll have to try that with my sig to see if it works on a 1911. i probably should've done that before posting.

There is a two tone E series with the bobbed tail at Big Daddy's in Hagerstown. I was drooling on it today.
