Easier said than done. Dont really know people with any pistols. Got lots of riffles in the family, but no pistols. Any other advice?? :P
Posting this here is probably helpful. There are quite a few members from the Ft.Wayne area who could probably be talked into a meet up day to try their pistols. If it's something I can make it to, your welcome to try my peashooters.
    I only have 3. One is a target plinker that's a .22rimfire...that one probably doesn't count.
Otherwise, I've got a .38 revolver (Smith & Wesson Airweight) and a compact .45 (Kimber Ultra Carry).

Taurus is not a crappy company. I've owned one for 10+ years and I've never had a problem.

$350 range is not a bad starting point.

    Kel-tec P3AT - $289
    Walther P22 - $349
    Taurus .38 - $389

There are quite a few others in that range. Bear in mind that these are list price at the local shop and most shops will come down in price.

What are you hoping to accomplish? Daily carry? Home defense? Accuracy? Which is more important?

Just out of curiosity - what gun do you REALLY want?

    Really???

I hate giving advice because I always feel like I am just pushing my opinion.

You shouldnt....considering I asked. Your advice may be all I take into account. You never know. And say you didnt give me your advice, I got a crappy gun and was killed trying to shoot an invader.

Now, I'm just rambling! THANKS for your advice.

Daily carry usually means a smaller gun which will hurt accuracy, but you can still be accurate at reasonable distances. For home defense, a .22 isn't the best choice. Any way to get to Kokomo? I have 9mm, 38 special, .40 S&W, .22, and .380 you could try.

This could be possible. Kokomo is what...an hour away?

INGO NWI social group we have been planning a group shoot at Jasper Pulaski.

    Here are the measurables:

    Where:
Jasper Pulaski- Map of 5822 Fish and Wildlife Ln Medaryville, IN by MapQuest

    When:
    April 18, 12 PM

Put whatever ammo you want in your gun, but only commercial/surplus in others. Bring your own ear/eye protection. Dress for the weather. It can get muddy. Make sure you sign in. The sign in station is a mile east of the range. We aren't renting the range or anything, so space might be limited.

It is about 1.5 hours from you but there will several members there and would be a good chance to get to throw some lead down range out of several different guns.

Start a thread in a common area forum stating your intentions to get help with the "try before buy" aspect of gun-hunting. I'd stick "Ft. Wayne" in the subject title, too...unless you're willing to travel to try them. When/if you set something up, PM me the date/location (because I don't check the forums every day, but PMs give me email alerts) and I'll try to make it there with what I have, too.
Good luck, girl with an awesome name!

If you could make it to Kokomo sometime, my wife and I could manage to get you some free range time. Yeah, it's about an hour away. All you would have to do is supply the ammo for the 9 and 40 (I don't have any plinking rounds for them right now).

    Way Up North!!
The Taurus 22 would be a great first gun. I teach a ccw class in MI and have seen time and time again that husbands /boy friends send there loved ones to the range with a 38 special or a compact nine or .40 and they cant hit the side of a barn, while you want to carry the gun with the biggest caliber that you can confidently shoot & carry this changes with time and practice.

Any gun is better than no gun!! but a 22 is cheep to shoot low recoil and will build confidence in your shooting skills as long as you are grounded in the fundamentals I.E. grip, stance, site alignment, trigger squeeze and follow thru. And at 7 yards that little 22 will be very accurate. Once you build some time on that gun then you can move up, I have put allot of people in the Bersa Thunder 380 acp great little gun for about $275.00 to $300.00 nice trigger pull, down side of it is its safety decocker but the main thing is to practice with what you have, and a 22 will let you do that cheaply and with out allot of recoil. Hope this helps. Gary ;)

    RachelMarie, here's my :twocents:

My wife bought that exact same Taurus - and she loves it, when it fires.

She can count on at FTF or FTE once out of every other loaded magazine. Having said that, that's a-o-k if at the range. She can shoot 500 rounds through it for $15 bucks. And you can find that gun new for around $200. Buy a good srewdriver for the grips, though. You will constantly be re-tightening them.

I like to shoot that little thing too, and IMO, it's plenty accurate. It really IS a fun gun to shoot.

However, if you want something for self defense, I don't think you can trust a .22 - that's my opinion.

She bought a Bersa Thunder .380cc (concealed carry) and loves to shoot it just as much, but at least it is geared more toward self defense. Having said that, we buy 1-2 boxes at a time IF and WHEN we can find the ammo. You're not going to buy a .380 anytime soon and take it to the range and pump 500 rounds through it - and if you are, you're going to spend over $300-400 for the ammo to do it, simply cuz you can't find it very easily.

So, long story short, here's my opinion:

If you just want to get accustomed to shooting; go for it - great choice!

If you want it for self defense, too - pass on it.

I would recommend a .38+P revolver as your first buy. My recommended brand is S&W but that is all up to you. Yes it might be a little more expensive but it is a simple point and shoot weapon with a nice trigger pull that won't let you accidentally pull it but won't strain your finger. Also might think about Taurus PT111 9mm or any variation of this pistol. The Taurus curse somehow does not apply to the Millennium pro series. I have a PT145 and it has always been very reliable. And they go for less than $400. Check one out next time you are in your local gun shop.

I think you should take these folks up on their offers.. find a local range and get some people to go shooting with you. If you were closer to my area (Lafayette) I'd offer you a nice outdoor range, some basic instruction, some time with a .22, Glock 9mm and .40, 1911a1 if you want, heck, even a HiPoint! There's TONS of folks on here that would love to go shooting with someone..
