It's tough. A lot of "fake" homeless/needy people out there. Professional beggars. I try to look at the person and make a judgement call on whether to help or not. I think a lot of other people just ignore all of them because they can't tell one way or another.

The scam artists are the real people to hate.

Scam or not if you see a kid out freezing like that any adult should want to help. Helping does not mean give him money but get him into a restaurant with a hot meal, get him to a church, get him to a police station. How many hundreds of people walked right by him?

He would have gotten my coat, my hat, a warm meal, and an offer of help. Done it before, would do it again, and I don't think I've gotten one of the "bad apples," unless all they were trying to score was a meal and some conversation.

I woulda been miffed upon discovering it was an experiment, though.

Many times during my lifetime, I have offered to help someone like this by offering to take them to get food, shelter or fuel for their "out of gas" vehicle with children inside. If/When they ask only for cash I tell them "No Thanks, I have to leave now."

There are/were certain intersections here in Indy where a team can bring in as much as $15,000 a week-end. Not bad income for a few hours per day work. Fortunately we have new laws that have helped, but the people are still there, just moved back a bit.

Give to your Church and other Non-Profit places that help our down-and-out people. Crooks don't want their help, so the money does go to those who need help.

    God Bless us, every one.

It reminds me of one of my favorite Simpson episodes. The one where Lisa tricks Homer and Bart into thinking that they have Leprosy and suggests that maybe god is punishing them.

Bart says "But why would god punish a kid............I mean an American kid?"

I too have lost all faith in people but not because of the reactions of the people in the street but by the scammers you see everyday and people that make fake videos to prove their point. Been reading a lot on ethics lately and it's quite the common practice to ignore the outcomes that don't support your stand. How many people offered help but were cut out of the video?

Had some "homeless" chick approach me in a restaurant 2 days ago, after playing out her well rehearsed scenario I offered to buy her and her unseen two year old lunch. She said she wanted money, not needed money, wanted money. When I told her I wasn't buying her story she promptly told me to go **** myself and moved across the room looking for a new sucker!

As she was escorted out of the restaurant I watched her get into a very slightly used minivan that still had paper tags on it and drive across the street to the next restaurant.

There are too many organizations out there trying to help the legitimately needy and too many scammers out there. My charity ran out a long time ago when professional scammers such as United Way were outed for their "extravagant" soirees for donors.

    No more.

Getting off of I-70 west bound at Terre Haute is a spot where you will always see someone with a cardboard sign. A few weeks ago my wife and I were going somewhere and there was the normal guy with his sign saying that he was out of work and had no money. As we went south and right after going under 70, there was someone along the road in a big dog costume holding a sign for a dog sale at the pet store that is by the mall.

So, there is a guy along the road with a sign saying he has no job/money, and within 2 blocks, a guy with a job standing along the road holding a sign. There are jobs out there, even if all you are good at is standing and holding a sign.

    That is total BS. dontfeed

5 degrees in socks and a t-shirt? BS. Those folks were smart to walk by, as they should have.

Do they think the camera man is invisible? How come some passer's by have their faces edited out and some don't?

That is a 911 call for the kid's health concerns and whoever put him out there.

I quit giving to the United Way a long time ago as well. When I found out the leadership had been lining their own pockets, and strong arming employers into "guilting" employees into giving.
In my mind they will never recover. And it has left a bad tasted in my mouth for other "professional" charities. I am more apt to help someone one on one. Like the case of this "social experiment".

Riley Hospital is our only charity. I see the work they do. My Grand daughters life was saved there. They have our support.

Hands out beggars get the stink eye from me.

I've offered help a few times but I Knew someone who picked up a woman claiming that she needed a ride to her grandfather's funeral. She gladly offered a ride and it ended up being that it was on 38th street, then all the way to Carmel. After she asked for money and it was declined she fell asleep in my friends car. Then, after she was dropped off at a Kroger parking lot the woman in distress ran up to another car pleading the same case. It only takes one to cause someone to be skeptical of it all.
