If I understand it correctly, Catalonia has a semi-autonomous relationship to the rest of Spain similar to Scotland with the UK. I'm uncertain as to how much sovereignty it enjoys similar to the U.S. which is actually a dual sovereignty system of government: federal and state (with federal supremacy and certain select powers reserved to the federal).

I anticipate, after today's news cycle, that Spain will use military force, if necessary, to suppress a secession insurrection. Will the Carlists come out of the woodwork again (use Google; a provocative question)? Who knows. There is much history here going back to well before the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's that pitted the Republicans (supporting socialism with communist elements) against the Falangists (Francisco Franco's fascist party) and deep into the 19th and 18th Centuries with Carlism and the three Carlist Wars spanning the 19th Century regarding the succession to the throne. There were Basque Separatist terror attacks throughout Spain during the Franco regime, another similar semi-autonomous region west of Catalonia along the French border. The death of Franco and emergence of a constitutional monarchy eased the Basque situation. However, there have been separatist movements seething in both regions for centuries.

Not trying to argue with you personally but they seem like the exact same thing to me - A group of people different from another group of people who want self government.

It's funny how some people (again, not directed at you) think it's ok for some groups to have the right of self governance but not others.

Everyone should have that right, otherwise it's just different variations of who has the bigger stick.

Catalans are native to Catalonia. It's their land and resources.
