The nickel coating is flaking off a double nine revolver. What the best and most economical way to re-coat?

I have a Nickle plated S&W 442 airweight. It looks kind of rough. I have often wondered if it could be stripped and hard chromed? Sorry, I am not much help.

It shoots and carries fine, just looks rough.

I'd say sandblast to bare metal and Cerakote. If you are looking at economical.

As far as the "hard chromed" comment, metal is nickle plated prior to chroming. If you are wanting it redone, just don't go to the final step of chroming.

You may be confusing decorative chrome process and industrial hard chrome process.

I own a Cogan hard chrome revolver and I don't think there is an undercoat of nickel.

    I could be wrong....

What's the intended use of the gun, OP?

I've often thought of having my 642 redone. It's not in bad shape - but you can tell it's been carried a lot - especially to the rear of the blast shield. (or whatever it's called).

I then think about it more and realize that it'd still be a carry gun and it'd end up in the same or worse condition down the road. So - I've thus far passed on having it refinished.

If you DO want something cerakoated, don't feel bad about looking up Squirt239's refinishing business. Since he won't post it, here it is: Havlin's Firearms Finishing

Another good Indy-ish refinisher is INGOer AllenM.

you could go with electroless nickle. mahovsky's metalife website says they EN over aluminum. i have had them blue a pistol and hardchrome a pistol. both came out beautifully.
