I am want to have a good long rifle setup, mostly just for fun rangeshooting but with the chance of doing other things in the future. I have wantedto have a .308 and honestly don't know too much about them. I have always beenmore of a handgun person with the occasional 91/30 or Ar-15. I have heard greatthings about the Remington 700 and the things you can do with it. Being incollege still I am very limited on what I can do however would like the optionto add on later with the funds allowing it (I also want to later make my ownloads, but that's another conversation for when that time comes).

My question is, what would you buy if you were able to spend right around$1200 on the rifle/accessories? I also am really looking the idea of thedetachable magazine which I realize many people don't go with, what are youropinions of that?

Remington 700 is pretty much the go to in my opinon. $1,200 is a decent start price, gun you can get for no problem. .308 is a solid round and you could ring steel at 1000 yards. What will get you is the Optic. You could easily get a rifle with a nice bull barrel for your allowance, however a good optic will put you a tad over.

This is my opinion. Good luck on your search. You can usually find some nice rigs on here.

+1 on Rem 700 and save for optics. Or...there are many reasonably priced sub-moa rifles out there right now: Tikka T3, Vanguard S2/Howa, Marlin X7, TC Venture. Add a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and you're all set and under budget. 700 platform is hard to beat if you want to upgrade stock, trigger, add DBM, etc. later though. Also, Tikka accessories are $$$. The Howa Hogue-stocked new model has better trigger than in the past I hear, but haven't tried it. I have a bone stock LSS700 in .257 Wby Mag that I am working up loads for, but I am looking for a second, more all-around rifle in 7mm-08. I have a sako and love the action, so I am leaning Tikka T3 (unless I buy the Kimber I've been drooling over first:):). Good Luck.

Look for a good Savage rifle or Rem 700 in .308 Win... Don't spend any more than $500.

Then invest the rest in a good scope mount, rings, and scope.

Savage Model 11 Hoghunter is a great under 500 dollar gun. It is free floating with heavy barrel and accutrigger. Also comes threaded for accessories. Very accurate right out of the box. Detachable magazine will really raise the price on most rifles. it would be hard to keep under a 1200 dollar budget and still get a good scope.

I vote 700. I am in the middle of doing one now. They are a lot of fun to do and the possibilities are endless much like an AR just in a bolt gun. And yes the scope will cost you the most.

700 for the aftermarket options... Get the rifle and a scope first (which will cost you all of $1200 and then build up the rest of the rifle later if you think you need to.

Thank you all, I think I am going to go with a heavy barrel 700 whenever I can find a decent price on one. Please let me know if you find one!

I went with a Savage and a Weaver tactical 4x20. It came just under the $1200 you were talking about. I have a Remington 700 and a Burris extreme tactical 4x16. That combo cost me $1700. One other nice thing about the Savage is if you like when you get the money you can always replace the barrel your self. On the Remington you will have to pay a gun smith do it. Good luck with what ever you decide.

I'd keep your eyes peeled in the classifieds on here. I bought a Savage model 10 in .308 from a fellow INGO'er with 26" heavy barrel and 10-40x tactical scope. It already had a Mcmillan stock and he even included 150 of his reloads and some Sierra match king bullets. Got it for $950 and the thread was over 6 months old!!!! That rifle shoots VERY well out to 700 yrs. Probably further if I had more room to try. Good luck finding what you want.

Savage 10. Can find on used market for around 500. And look into Millet long range scopes. IMO they are amazing optics without spending a huge amount of cash. Find someplace to shoot out to 500 yards and have a blast. Nothing blows off steam like hitting targets way out!

What about joining the Indiana Pistol and Rifle and getting a CMP Garand?

Just trying to muddy the waters for you ;-)

The 700 is a good rifle!
