I live near Purdue university in West Lafayette and have my LTCH. I know that carrying on campus is against the law, but what is considered campus? Is it the academic campust or is it anything within a certain range? just to be safe i never carry in West lafayette unless i am driving through without stopping. Any information or input would be great.

    thanks,

It's not illegal to carry on campus, only against their policy. If you're a student and get caught, you will most likely get expelled. If not a student, all they can do is ask you to leave. If you refuse, they'll get you for trespass.

Yep no law in Indiana saying you cant carry on a college campus. But there is no law that prohibits the school from expelling you for carrying a gun on a college campus:xmad:. but if youre not a student or you can keep it concealed then have at it:draw:

I was actually going to post the part about what exactly is considered campus a couple days ago, but by the time I got to the computer I forgot what I was going to ask about. haha. I also live in the W. Lafayette area. I am a student, and was curious about what is considered "campus." Thanks

I've been a Purdue student in WL, I now live in Lafayette, and I work in West Lafayette.

As others have said, there is no Indiana law prohibiting you from carrying on a campus but Purdue does have regulations stating you cannot carry "on campus". I would consider this any building owned or operated by Purdue University and any land that building sits on. Obviously, it is up to you whether you want to risk your education just to carry on school grounds.

Chauncey Hill and Wabash Landing/Levee are not Purdue University grounds.

I work for Tippecanoe Co EMS, stationed in West Lafayette, and if you want to PM me your address I can give you a better idea of what is considered "on campus" if you are interested. Basically, these are the Purdue buildings/grounds in West Lafayette. Essentially the academic, administrative, residential, sports complexes, facility services buildings, etc. You get the point.

Don't care what you were told, as others have mentioned. You can LEGALLY carry on Purdue's campus. If you are student, you are going to get expelled because it is against their laws. (if they find out obviously)

I have called Purdue police several times to ensure their policy on carrying around campus, and driving through, stopping a the circle k just across the street, chauncey, etc, are not "on campus". So even if you get pulled over on stadium carrying, you cannot get expelled or in trouble with the school. It's a public road, and you're allowed to travel on it.

Can't be any more clear than that! :)

Though I've carried many places, I don't think it's worth tempting expulsion by carrying on Purdue grounds as a student. I would imagine that a nonzero number of Purdue students/faculty do carry on campus, but I'm not one of them.

Needless to say, if somebody pulls a gun on me on campus I'll be fairly pissed I don't have my piece :D:rolleyes:

Thanks for the help everyone, but what about like sidewalks on the edge of campus? For example the sidewalk on the East side of northwestern between McD's and on south to Grant. What about the same stretch but on the west side of the road by Armstrong, Physics, EE, etc.?

Thats tricky. We have the same dilemma with our EMS boundary lines at these locations with Tipp. Co EMS & Purdue EMS. You best bet would be to call either WLPD or PUPD and ask what they think.

When I went to Ball State I CC when I was going to be on campus late at night. I lived a few blocks off campus and the best way back home from the library was through a wooded area on campus that was common travel during the day but dark and out of the way at night. It was common for me to be in the library or computer lab until 2am so I usually carried at night for the trip back as on campus at BSU is really well lit and fairly secure IMO.

The sidewalks on city streets are fine as they are put in and maintained by the city/state(which ever owns the roadway). As much as I don't like the rules for state funded colleges, if it were me, I'd CC when I'm near any of our college campuses. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for our right to OC( I'm not going to turn this into a CC/OC debate), I just don't want to take the time to try and state my rights to campus police if I were to get detained for OC on a sidewalk near campus. My :twocents:.

With sidewalks, the question is really is it a general public sidewalk. Basically every sidewalk that parallels a _public_ street is a sidewalk that is completely open to any member of the public to use. They can't stop you from carrying your weapon on them. Now sidewalks that are poured between buildings and to walk to and from private buildings to the public sidewalks are private property. Also, colleges and universities will sometimes get tired of waiting for local gov to act on some issues, so it is possible that colleges will decide to spend their own money upgrading public sidewalks and/or streets. This doesn't mean the sidewalk and street is now private. As long as the local unit of government that the entity is located in maintains the right-of-way, then it is open to all as far as I am concerned.

Another one brought back from the dead.

While there is no law banning carry on campus, there is law about on school property, that includes licensed daycare, I've been told that there is a daycare on the purdue property, where that boundary line is I don't know, I'm not familiar with the campus, and the law is actually quite vague. So I would watch out for that, as well as if you're a student any hit of having a gun getting out, or if you're an employee, that you make sure you're up to date on the "parking lot" law.

There is a building on campus that is a daycare. It is a separate building from the main portion of "campus" or specifically the main portion of the academic campus. It is (or was last I knew) located at the NW corner of State St. (St. Rd. 26) and Martin Jischke Dr., about a block north of the PUPD station.

Just because this building is near/surrounded by PU, doesn't mean that it encompasses the whole campus in the daycare/k-12 school laws any more than any other daycare or k-12 school near campus.
