Push to Scrub Gun Amendment in D.C. Bill Continues - DCist: Washington DC News, Food, Arts & Events

When Mayor Adrian Fenty opined last week that D.C. residents should be willing to accept having Congress gut the city's gun laws in exchange for a voting member in the House, many activists were peeved that the District's chief executive would make such comments in the midst of a lobbying push to secure amendment-free voting rights legislation. But instead of grousing about what Fenty said, they seem to be ignoring his comments and have renewed the push to make a clean D.C. voting rights bill a reality. In an mass email sent out today, DC Vote Executive Director Ilir Zherka informs that the advocacy organization and its partners are lobbying members of Congress, running ads and circulating a letter demanding that the gun-law gutting amendment be dropped from the D.C. House Voting Rights Act.

As you may remember, the Senate inserted such language in legislation passed earlier this month, and members of the House followed suit when the NRA threatened to score a procedural vote on the legislation. Both the ads and the letter, which is signed by 19 civil rights leaders and elected officials, forcefully argue for a clean bill. "A debate over a bill to end the injustice of 'taxation without representation' is an inappropriate forum for revisiting the District’s gun laws. We support D.C. residents’ fundamental right to voting representation in Congress and strongly urge support for a clean DC House Voting Rights Act," the letter reads. DC Vote has also set-up an online letter for voting rights supporters to send to their members of Congress.

Zherka says that the legislation may come to a vote as early as this week, which would be something of a surprise given that most congressional supporters of the proposal admit that they are still short at least a few dozen votes.
