If you live near Indy, try Marion county fish and game. Bowling pin shoot once a month on a saturday, or their friday night Steel! I've shot pins there, and steel at Atlanta Consevation Club, both are a blast!

I've shot several matches with the guys from ACT. They definitely know what they're doing, and they're a lot of fun to boot. You won't have to deal with some drill sergeant barking orders at you.

The best advice is to get a holster, some mag pouches, and at least 4 mags and go to your nearest match. I like blade-tech and comp-tac for holsters, and Wilson and mccormick for mags.

Ditto on ACT. They will be holding several "intro to competition classes soon. You can use that Kimber for a number of competitions. USPSA, IDPA, Steel, Pins.

As for when and where, check out Atlanta Conservation Club. There is a full calendar including ACT courses. And a few links to other clubs around the Indy area.

    See you at the range.

    Westside of Indy.
I would recommend grabbing your gun, some ammo, magazines, holster, and a couple mag pouches and heading out to Marion County Fish and Game for a Friday Night Steel or a Bowling Pin Match. Or, go to Atlanta Conservation Club for any of their matches. The people at either of these places will be plenty helpful. If you just show up and tell them you have no idea what you're doing, everyone will help you along the way and you will have loads of fun.

Friday Night Steel followed by a class with ACT is a great idea.

We have a pretty good group here that shoots matches together regularly.
