The bottom pic fits in with what we had to do in Connersville. There was a subdivision some miles out of town to the west out St rd 52.
CB radios were the deal then and that housing division had lost power. Maybe 75 homes in there with no heat/power. We put together a convoy of 4WD trucks etc. The natl guard armory opened up and brought out 2 tracked vehicles and a local contractor provided 2 huge front loaders. The road at the edge of town was a 10 ft deep drift as far as you could see. The front loaders started clearing a path best they could. We stocked up the trucks with food/fuel/supply's etc. There were some sick folks out there so an ambulance was in the caravan.
It took over 4 hours to get out to them. Never saw any happier people than those folks. Shovels and snow blowers. Fresh hot coffee and pastries.
We left to go at around 3:00 PM. I got home around 2:00 AM. I brought a few folks into town to stay with friends.
What an adventure. Everybody pitched in. No questions asked. If you could help you just did.

I remember watching people walking through the blowing snow to get to the liquor store, I spent the next few days with my girlfriend.

When my neighbors saw me dug out and moving the biggest requests, we got to help was Pepsi/beer and cigarettes.
I was living in Lafayette at the time. Got a call 3 days later from friends that lived in the country. The roads were passable up to about 3/4 mile from their house. We loaded up with beer, milk, and dog food as per their request, drove as far as we could and hiked the supplies in.

I just remember staring out the window at the hard blowing snow watching IU students walking through that stuff after they announced class were cancelled until Monday.

For years after that you heard continuous fear mongering about the coming ice age on the news. Hollywood even made a movie starring Paul Newman called Quintet about the frozen future.

The Regulator served up a drink called the Snowblower, half Yukon Jack, and half 151.

44 years ago I was going to IU Bloomington, living directly across the street from IU Memorial Stadium in a trailer at the corner of 17th and Fess.
Was snowed in with the woman who would later become my wife in 2012.
She couldn't make it back to her place.
    We were just friends then.

44 years ago I was still living in North Central Wisconsin. Somewhere my parents have a picture that my dad took of our street for grandma's newspaper.

I don't remember it at all, I was only 4 at the time.

    Pretty much Michigan.
44 years ago i was -17 years old. That would’ve been an interesting one too see first hand though.

The worst one ive ever seen was about 30” and i was moving into my trailer. My old 79 k20 handled it like a champ with an enclosed car hauler full of my stuff behind it. Granted it did have a snow plow that i put to work the whole way lol.

He is not a vet, got invited to the Iraqi veterans range day in Georgia with his fully automatic Browning 1918 A2 BAR. he has done a couple of videos of it at the range. Very cool war machine! He is a military firearms collector and has many fully auto weapons.
Gotcha ... very cool, for sure !
