He moved in with them after a divorce before moving into his own place. That’s hardly a “their house, their rules” situation. It sounds like it was still packed up, the folks came across it and took it upon themselves to dispose of it. It was only discovered to be missing when he reached his new place, so it wasn’t like he was repacking it.
