    I would guess that what you're seeing are Barred Owls. Short-Eared Owls are almost always, almost only found in tree-less, flat, grassy areas.
    If the owl you're seeing is in a tree, then I'd bet it's a Barred Owl.

    I had to drive to a place in Ohio to see Short-Eared Owls, and I've never seen one in Indiana.

    If the owl you're seeing is in a tree, then I'd bet it's a Barred Owl.

    I had to drive to a place in Ohio to see Short-Eared Owls, and I've never seen one in Indiana.

    must be barred ones then ......sure looks like the ones in the pic.....

    I see short ear regularly in the ditches of Benton and Newton Counties while pheasant hunting. Saw one the last time out.

    Looking at some pictures of a short eared in flight, that may be what I've seen coming home from work. Definitely some type of owl, and the habitat is right, but I am no expert.
