The oil situation is sketchy to stake anything on. The Saudis themselves are trying to plan how their economy will work once they run dry, because they're pretty sure they're getting close.

No, it's because we don't want any one power to have too much influence over the Middle East and we want proxies against our enemies, which today is Iran and we are still checking Russian (formerly Soviet) influence in the region. Russia is buddies with Syria now and we will continue to be buddies with anyone we deem a strategic asset regardless of their ideology or human rights record.

Remember when we were were unofficial allies with Iraq under Reagan? Remember we did it largely because we believed it was better we buddy up to him then allow the Soviets to buddy up to him? Remember we didn't really want Iraq or Iran to win too much because their influence would be too strong so we played both sides of the fence despite Iran taking Americans hostage? Remember Iran Contra? Remember when Israel supplied Iran's Air Force to fight Iraq because then they thought Iraq was the bigger threat to their existence? Remember when Jordan and Saudi Arabia supported Iraq?
