Top is my 4506-1 fixed sights.
The bottom is a 5903, alloy framed and you just don't see them very often.
I have the boxes for both of them.
The 4506 was purchased many years ago in my quest to find the perfect .45.
I have not been disappointed with it.

Can't forget the 3rd gen 22s as well.

I remember those days as SMITH and WESSON gun of the month club days.
I only have a 5906 that I passed to my son but had a 5903, and started with a Mel 59, 39,659, and that 2x4 handle with a slide the 459.
    All fun at the time, but then came G L O C K !

I still prefer a stainless steel beast. Plus most of the 3rd gens have slowly been rising in price as the parts supply gets smaller or more people realize how underrated these gems are.

    Love mine!

    4506

    645

4513 TSW (early model, no rail six round mags, bought new)

Any one of them will feed empty brass, totaly reliable and will never sell. Jim.

When I saw about the brass years back I had to try it out to see if it would work. I even tried in some of my others with mixed results, though my 3rd gens will do it time and time again.

I like the TSW's without the rail as I think with them they look out of place.

Anyone else completely strip their 3rd gens down to bare frame and slide minus removal of extractor to give them a good cleaning once a yr?

My 'go to' 9mm has been a Model 39-2 for nearly 20 years now. But, my Baby has been rockin' her 3913LS at Revere's Riders pistol events all year.

I shop the gen-3s quite a bit lately. I could see picking up a CS9 or another 3913 or 3914.

Can someone explain what is gen-1 vs. gen-2 vs. gen-3, etc.??? I assume the Model 39 is gen-1.

    Generally speaking(with a few exceptions)two digit models are gen1,.....39, 59, 39-2.

Three digit models are gen2(only real difference is a firing pin safety),.....439, 559, 669, 645, etc.

Four digit are gen3,......3913, 6946, 5906, 4505, etc. forever because there are thousands of different models. Including the TSW models. Gen3 guns have the one piece wraparound grips. Gen1 and 2 have 2-piece panels.

The common exceptions that I can think of are the value line models. 909, 457, 410 etc. They're gen3 but simplified(cheapened). They contain a fair amount of plastic and a simplified locking system. The 915 is usually tossed in this group but it's actually a transition gun,....no plastic and has the normal locking lug on the barrel like other standard models,....only the exterior frame and slide machining is simplified.

    Then there's the Chiefs Special line,......CS9, CS40, CS45. Also simplified sub-compact gen3.

Shot my 645 at ACC IDPA match yesterday 11-5, first time ever in competiton, first time in a couple years I shot anything but a revolver. Yes, I was slow and clumsy shooting a SA and had some problems with accuracy, similar to shooting a revolver. Shot close to 100 rounds and the gun was flawless. I might have to practice a little with it and try again, the gun shot just where I aimed. Jim.

My buddy from Wisconsin came down to visit this weekend and had him try out my 5903 and 4506. He loved them both and was wanting to know where he could find them. I think I may have another convert to our cause.

yeah I changed my 59xx to a flat back years ago.. it shoots better..
Four guns in Laff has a 915 for sale right now..

I need to go there as soon as my night sights arrive for my Walthers.

And we still need to do lunch or dinner.

I have the flat version on my 5904. It's much better than the curved!

Well, after reading the entire thread, it appears that we are talking about all of the steel frame Smiths, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen.
I guess this makes my 639 eligible. Still want a 10mm to go with it and the 610.
