    SAV, ELP, DFW, SBN,
I just received this as part of my uncle's estate. I know as much about it as google can provide. If someone knows how to date it (roughly guessing '55), and an approximate value (for insurance), I appreciate it. It has the original box, brown wax paper, and price tag. I know of only one time that it was possibly shot. Stamped MOD. 36 and a SN of 752XX, a letter J, a number 5 and a number 6 or 9.
    Thanks,
    J

S&W will be able to give you the date if you call them, as for value look up GB for most current or according to my 3rd SCSW around 425.

Fjestad's latest edition "Blue Book" has a price of $650.00 at 100% condition. At 98% the amount is $535.00. From your photo I would say that yours is real close, if not at the 100% grading. With box and papers it will likely bring more from the right buyer.

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Ed lists the early J Frame Range as:

    1955 55050- 75000
    1957 117770-125000

It appears that your Model 36 (752xx) falls in the unlisted 1956 range.

Nice piece. I have my Dad's model 38 and a model 36 as well. That one looks to be in excellent shape and the original box helps too! I once picked up just the box for an old Model 28 at a sale and sold it for $85.00!!!

I was most likely made in 67-68. S&W deleted the diamond grips in 68 and started stamping model #s in 1957.

Adding an additional digit to the serial number listed would move the manufacture date into that range. Also the pictures show the newer thumb-piece, not the flat latch that was dropped in 1966.
