You mean like an IP address that we all have because we have to pay for internet service just so we can be issued this unique id number? Date irrelevant.

Almost impossible to do given the way the Internet is setup... besides, even if they do figure out a way to do it, do you really think that there will not be hundreds of ways to get around it in a matter of days?

    Think off-shore proxy server....

They can shove their internet ID# the same place they can shove my SSN.

Without the .gov mandated SSN (which was NEVER to be used for identification) IDENTITY THEFT COULD NOT EXIST as it does today.

I wonder what kind of new criminal activity an IIDN would spawn?

Schmidt stresses that anonymity will remain on the Internet, saying there's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge."

Probably because it has already emerged.

I guess that's my question - what's the point? To what end? Just because he can? As mentioned above, we already have IP addresses, and people can use proxy servers if need be.

Think of it as RealID for the Internet... instead of just tracing ****** porn to your house, it'll trace it to the person who was using that computer when it was downloaded.

    Or so they say...

I'd recommend you check out Tor Project (dot) org.

A public IP Address are not a good way to figure out if someone actually did something. On a private network they can be used a little more effectively, but it is still better to use something else like a user login to identify.

I individual Internet ID, is such a bad idea it is not even funny. We don't need to give the .gov another way to track what we do.

"We are not talking about a national ID card. We are not talking about a government-controlled system." Oh... the irony. Internet ID cards are just a front for giving our of-so-wise government more insight into our private lives.

You're assuming external control of protocols.
When Goverment has the keys to the kingdom, it can do anything.
NSA wanted to insert a special key for RSA, but Rivest Shamir and Adelman wanted no part of it. Presumably the government wanted to modify the algorithm to be able to decrypt information via their special key.

But when Goverment controls, monitors, and surveils all traffic, worldwide, in something approaching real-time, there is no such thing as a proxy. There is effectively no such thing as network encryption. When you are aware of ALL information flowing through any given point, you can use time pinpointing to determine origins of traffic anywhere, anytime.

Goverment has gotten every single encroachment of liberty it has ever asked for unto the present day. It will continue to steal liberty and privacy from We the People until the day It rounds us up into boxcars and ships us off to the re-education camps.

But how will they track us if our cell phone battery is dead?
