    Scrounging brass
    Does this include CW-era firearms?
    Spencer 009.jpg
Spencer rifle in .52 rimfire, all original metal, replacement wood, replaced rear sight, swapped centerfire block but still have the rimfire. Serial number places it in those likely issued to Wilder's Lightning Brigade (Hoosiers). Have live BP rounds for it made from cut-off 50/70 brass, but haven't had the courage to fire any yet. Currently shoots blanks made from 32 gauge shotgun hulls. $1100 on GB.

1861 Sharps & Hankins Navy carbine, all original in .52 rimfire. Original rear sight, missing leather cover. $500 on GB.

    Also have a 1927 Mosin ($85) and a recently acquired M1 in .308.

My most used Milsurp is that 1942 Mauser 98K. It’s a German 8mm that my father mail ordered for me as a gift somewhere around 2010 for $450. I’ve had several other milsurps come and go but that one is the rock. I enjoy handloading the 8mm cartridge, I don’t tend to shoot groups with this rifle much, it’s purpose is to introduce the unfamiliar to what 8mm Mauser does to water jugs, pumpkins, and steel gongs.

Left of the laminate Mauser is an 8x56R Steyr M95 long rifle that was cut down to the carbine length. I bought it on gunbroker around 2020 for $450. Haven’t gotten to shoot this one yet thanks to my poor timing and the plandemic. Would love to purchase some clips and or ammo from somebody here if possible.

Honorable mention in the group includes a Winchester 1897 almost trench gun, spring 1905 production that was cut down to riot gun length. Purchased from the Indy 500 around 2017 for $350. I enjoy taking it to clays events and showing unfamiliar shooters a neat piece of history that still runs well.

This Colt 1911 was one that I didn’t realize I had to have until I had it in my hands. Figured out I’ll never be able to afford a surplus 1911, nor would I shoot it. I came across this early 2000s production Colt Government Model that is for all intents and purposes exactly like a milsurp 1911. LGS in 2021 for $850. Not one I have shot much, but when I have it’s usually 2 inches at 20 yards.

Great thread btw. Subbing to this one for sure.

I'm a big fan of Berthiers. (8mm Lebel) I just think that the "pregnant guppy" stock is just sexy as hell. Kind of like the Mae West of military guns. :): This is one that was given to the Turks after WWII, to be used by their forestry service to guard groves of the much sought after Turkish walnut trees. 8mm Lebel was the first smokeless rifle cartridge.

I'm detecting a current theme of French rifles, so I'll add my 1886/93 Lebel and 1874 Gras. The Lebel has a tubular magazine under the barrel with a cartridge lifter like a typical shotgun. It was the very first smokeless powder rifle. The Gras is a single shot black powder rifle. If you look at the bolts you can see how the Gras-Lebel-Berthier series were all a progression rather than independent developments. The Gras was also a progression from the previous Chassepot.

In case anyone else is looking for 7.7 Jap ammo, a website called abguns.com out of Traverse, Michigan has some 174gr Norma for $39/box. Still pretty salty, but best I've seen by about $5/box. Their s&h is a little expensive, but they didn't hit me for sales tax, so kind of a wash. They also have some cheap 9mm Federal and Norma to add to your order to take some of the sting out of shipping.

Oh, mil-surps, I can play! Don't have a lot of pics on line due to hosts getting stupid and lost passwords but here's a few. Haven't really been seriously collecting the last couple of years but when I was it was mostly Finnish and Swedish rifles.
    Some Swedes first.

And now a few Finns! A three fer of 1941 VKT M39s.
    0To3FF5.jpg

This my favorite shooter M39. Beat up, no blueing, stock has been nailed back together, but damn does it shoot! Trigger is one of the best I've seen on any mil-surp and while the barrel has some wear it is bright and shiny. I have no doubt this rifle put more than one Soviet in the ground. Oh, and it has an invisible friend.

I'm a Finn freak, had to narrow the focus a bit cuz I love milsurp rifles and I can't have em all. Here's a sample of walnut stocked rifles, top to bottom: '35 M28/30, P-26, 1919 Tula, 1922 Tula, 1915 Izhevsk, 1917 Remington

I'm also a big fan of Spanish Civil War rifles, the 1922 Izhevsk dragoon is a matching Soviet-era rework that was then sent to Spain. The 1923 Tula M91 is also SCW which is confirmed by the "Made in USSR" marking. The 1919 Tula is Finn, fairly rare as that was made during the Russian revolution. The PU sniper is one of my few Soviet rifles with no Finn or SCW marks, never thought I'd own one but it was too pretty.

....mine so far, 1873 Trapdoor, 1898 Krag, 1901 DA Colt, 1873 SAA is an repop, have a 1911 yet to arrive, still looking for an 1903 Springfield.....the CAS group I belong to started an offshoot military club to shoot primarily 1866-1900 weapons with a few exceptions where we allow any military bolt action used up to WW1.

addendum: forgot to add, the rifle and pistol should be something that could have been issued in the same time frame. If one studies history, there can be some interesting combinations. Uniforms are encouraged but not necessary to start out.

Here's one for Doggy Daddy and his Frenchies. Yeah, it's a Finn, but it was built on a Chatellerault (yes, I had to look up the spelling!) receiver. Previous owner shot this rifle in matches and sort of bedded the action.

Next up a couple of well traveled, well used M91s. New England Westinghouse built, shipped to Imperial Russia then ended up in Finland. First one still has all NEW parts except for the bolt assembly. Beat to hell walnut stock with very visible "English" contract mark.

I've got a few. In 2003, I set out to get one infantry rifle from every country in WWII. Back then, they were mostly 100 dollar rifles. I sort of stalled when it came to finding a Norwegian Krag or a Chinese Mauser. I guess I need to head down the South American Mauser rabbit hole at some point. The prices sure have gone up.

Nice collection and presentation. These days the bayonets cost as much as you paid for the rifles. Is that a homemade rack, or did you buy it somewhere?
