Visited my old ship the JFK a year ago. It is in Philidelphia waiting to be scrapped. Looked really bad. It was a sad sight.
When I was onboard it was always in tight shape.

My Uncle fought on the USS Langley during WWII. He was on CVL-27 not CV-1.

1993: Young USAF SSgt KellyinAvon is at Taegu (K-2, the second Air Base opened after the norks rolled south in 1950) Air Base, RoK. We weren't your usual base: 27 Blue Suiters and maybe 150 Army Senior NCOs and Warrant Officers lived on the base. K-2 had 5,000 ROKAF (RoK Air Force) supporting five fighter squadrons (three F-4Ds, two F-5Fs) and the F-4 depot was there so it was a busy place.

K-2 had built several new buildings (including the three buildings where we all lived and the small building in the middle of those three buildings) in the 18 months before... the USAF aircraft were pulled from the base. Went from 1,800 USAF to 27 real quick. The building in the middle? You guessed it, the GIs turned into a bar.

K-2 had no MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) function. We came under the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan (the very short time this organization didn't report to 7th Air Force. Thanks McPeak! OK that's a different thread) and basically paid a bribe to MWR at Osan to operate our bar, better known as The K-2 Hootch.

What you'd expect from a GI bar: a couple pool tables, dart boards, a big screen (by 1993 standards) TV, a cobbled together stereo with Bose 901 speakers (which were on an equipment account from when the base closed.) BBQ pavilion outside along with a sand volleyball court.

We couldn't have more than $500 in cash (inventory was not included) per our MWR overlords. We bought beer for $2.35/6-pack and sold it for 75 cents each. Hard liquor was rationed so it was beer/soda/wine coolers only. The bar staff worked for tips and free drinks, so keeping the safe under $500 was pretty easy. When we'd get close to $500 we'd by cue sticks, darts, or more music CDs.

Then... one night while I'm working in the bar... somebody comes up with the idea to sell t-shirts. There weren't many of us there, but there were folks passing through TDY pretty often. Per diem was $57/day at K-2 so with 75 cent beer and a snack bar where you could eat for cheap paying $10 for a t-shirt was an easy choice. So I go over to my room and grab an arm-load of t-shirts from various places to get some ideas. One of them was a Thurnall's Harley Davidson in Clarksville.






Yes that's a 30 year old t-shirt. It was one of the prototypes, not sure what material. The cotton one I got later (and we sold tons of) is long gone.

So sitting at the bar, we came up with this shirt. The back is based on the Thurnall's HD shirt that had the Indiana/Kentucky map on the back. It's Korea, we could get a place in Osan to make t-shirts.

At first we were paying $7/shirt and selling them for $10. We were able to buy new stuff for The Hootch and stay under $500.

Then we had a guy picking up an order (usually a garbage bag full of t-shirts) while he was at Osan. A guy in our unit, whose wife was Korean. She went in with him, renegotiated the deal, then we were getting them for $4/shirt... and still selling them for $10.

I was the bar manager at the time. I couldn't spend all the money we were making off the t-shirts!! I remember two of us going to the PX at Camp Walker, each with $250 to buy CDs! After Foal Eagle (HUGE exercise) we bought two new VCRs (played throughout the three buildings on TV channels) plus 500 VHS tapes, matching hats and jackets for everyone in the Detachment... and unit coins.

Damn, that was 30 years ago.

And then...

(One of the commenters said, we've only heard THIS side of the argument, how do we know it's true? And another commenter said, she was repeatedly let go. Then the command would go after her again. If she was wrong, why did she keep being released.
Seems to be a command bent on punishing someone for saying "NO!".
Even when they tell you, "I'm just following orders" is NOT AN EXCUSE and you HAVE TO refuse unlawful orders.

Sounds like, we ordered someone to kill every civilian in a hospital, regardless of age.
We tell our soldiers (marines, airmen, seamen) that they are supposed to refuse those types of orders.
A court said it was a bad order, to release her.
But we're not getting her for that.
We're getting her for refusing orders.
