    Hiding from reality
Back in the early 90's, I carried and M24 bolt rifle for a while, which is a Remington 700 in .308. I dropped targets at 1100 yards with nothing more than a 10X Leoupold scope and 180 grain match rounds. Now I am shooting the same type of rifle, but .270 and my own handloaded rounds, and I think I enjoy it more! I have rang steel with this one at 600 yds.

I am a believer in if you want to shoot long distance, get the caliber that you enjoy shooting, customize the rifle around it, and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Whittakers had a 6.5-284 on the rack in December.

I'm more of a fast twist 6BR sort of fellow - but that's only because I don't like feeding the .264 bullets which are a bit much for groundhogs in my opinion.

Switch barrel 375 Chey-Tac and 500 A-Square (throated for BMG's) being built at Lawton now (Its been nearly two years "now" is relative I suppose).

I don't know of any 6.5-284 factory rifles. I think they are all custom made. (I have often wondered if a 260 could be rechambered to 6.5-284)

The Rem 260 shoots the same bullet as the 6.5-284 (142 Sierra) at about 200 fps less velocity. The 260 is available in factory rifles.

3 years ago I and another shooter were being coached by (then) SSGT Norm Anderson of the USAMU on the 1000 yard line. The other guy was shooting a 6.5-284 and I was shooting my custom built Model 70 in 260 Rem with 142's.

To make a long story short, once he got us married up, there was no difference in wind corrections between the two rifles.

The 260 is an excellent choice, IMO.

But, again, your 243 will serve you well also at 600 yards.

Cooper chambers for the 6.5-284. I also believe this is the best choice. I have been very impressed with the 6.5-284. The lower recoil compared to a .338 will lenghten your time at the range.

.243/6mm in heavy bullets (100+ grs, esp 115 DTACs from David Tubb) are winning long range competitions left and right chambered in standard .243 Win and 6mm XC (which is a 22-250 case necked up to 6mm, more or less.)

If you want to go custom and heavy, check out the 338 Edge by Shawn Carlock.
