Probably Tree of Heaven.
That may be it. I'll have to go back to the area he pointed it out and see if I can find it again.

The small ones in diameter with hairy roots glued to the tree are either poison ivy or Virginia Creeper, both of which look a lot alike until you get to the mature leaves and share the exact same habitat. The circling vine COULD be either honeysuckle or Trumpet Creeper, hard to tell from the photo.
Without a doubt the tree was Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). DON'T cut it. It will resprout like crazy even if you treat the stumps. Foliar spray the short ones and do a basal bark treatment on the big ones. You'll be retreating the area for 2-3 years to get it all. Also know that if you basal bark treat them that they weeken quickly and will begin falling within a year or two of tree death.
