IU South Bend on Monday, student accidently left their bag at a help desk. Unfortunately for the student, he had left his handgun in the backpack and when the staffer searched it, found the gun. He reclaimed his bag but the incident was reported to campus police and the administration. Fortunately, he had a LTCH and didnt get in legal trouble. However, IUSB is reviewing disciplinary action.

News of this came to 95.3 MNC's attention. The Afternoon host Casey has extended an offer of an interview to that person. I know it wasn't me (as a fellow student there on campus) but I figured I'd get on here and extend the invitation.

If you aren't familiar with MNC, it is the conservative news talk radio station in South Bend. Casey is pro-2nd Amendment so I know the student would get a fair hearing and interview.

If you are that student and wish to get in contact with them, send me a PM and I'll get you in contact with the host.

Or visit 95.3 MNC or https://www.facebook.com/caseythehost on facebook.

I have off bodied carried many times in my life (brief case, computer bag) and will continue to do so when I feel appropriate. I never let it out of my sight though. If I am on the computer or reading, the bag is on the floor between my legs.

Off body carries need to be secured just for this reason with at lease a firing lock... someone else could have retrieved the weapon and used it. It's a trade off, time to unlock vs. choice to carry off body.

You could probably have a hundred tags with flashing lights and road flares with your name chiseled in granite and it would still get opened and searched for "contraband". Any unattended bag nowadays is getting looked through, you can bet that.

More importantly remember that while he was not violating the law he was violating the school rules and most likely will be kicked out.

Depending on his specific situation that could be anything from a minor inconvenience (transfer credits to a new school without losing too many) to major catastrophe (losing the scholarship allowing him to attend school or being close to graduation where many of the degree credits won't transfer requiring him to retake classes at another school).

That is why we need to encourage our state officials to force the campuses to change their policy.
