I feel somewhat responsible for him attacking the INGO table because of the Obama socialism posters I provided for sale. It's all my fault...Had he not seen these posters that offended him, he would have probably walked on by the table. After all, he was out to report on anything he could find that offended him. ;)

Techres -- you got a response. Check it out!!

Techres, I think this is a great idea, and I totally appreciate the invitation. I would love nothing more than to come down and shoot some guns, meet you and your wife, have a civil discussion, and write a follow-up.
As to your points about the article:
I’m sure the INGunOwners guy is a totally nice guy, as was pretty much everyone I met at the show. It just so happens that at that moment, I had just been reading some birther stuff (which I find totally repulsive) and had just moments before overheard a conversation about a race war. In that context, the strength of that guy’s hand, and the flimsiness of my own scared me a little, though I’m not proud to admit it. Like you, I should be spending more time at the gym
    icon_smile.gif

As for your broader point about my visit’s being only a glimpse, in which I only found what I came to find, I’ll humbly say this: you’re right. Some of the things I saw and heard can’t be explained away or excused in my book. The fact that I found the things I was looking for still means I found them, and I do think that’s unfortunate.
But, as a colleague has pointed out, you can find nutty people people at pretty much any convention if you’re looking for them. You’re totally right, which is why I think it’s a great idea that I come meet you in Bloomington.
I do want to emphasize that my feelings about gun ownership are very mixed, which I tried to convey in the article. And my snarky criticisms about some of the gun show-goers I encountered aren’t meant as a statement on gun owners, generally.
I mean it when I say some of my best friends are gun owners. So are a lot of people in my family. And I’ve considered buying one at one time, myself. I actually don’t understand sometimes why this is an issue that always cuts across traditional left-right lines.
I just find all the birther stuff, and “Obama fingers,” all the race hysteria, the ultra-conservative stickers and bumper stickers, and the obsession over Nazi paraphernalia at gun shows really disturbing. I’ll always be disturbed by that sort of thing. If I were running a gun show, I’d keep the political sloganeering and the Nazi pins out. It’s a gun show, not a political convention or a war memorabilia convention. As it is now, the associations invite the criticism by juxtaposition alone, and belie the idea that gun shows are just about the guns.
Do me a favor and click on the “Email me tips” button below the “about me” section of my page. Send me your email address and I’ll send you mine. Again, I think your suggestion is a great one. We’ll make it happen.

I responded and we will meet soon I hope!

And, to give the guy one thing - fingers?! That is out there. Not to keep a guy from making money in any legal way, but fingers? Only two ways that could go - Zombie props, or finger necklaces. And neither is something I have seen before at any gun show.

We will be talking about mindset though. The liberal mindset sees harmony created from central control - i.e. keep them out, etc. The opposite mindset is one of individual liberty balanced by responsibility - i.e. "What the heck are you doing there Joe?". That same difference is where the disconnect over a FTF deal either being a "loophole" or a "private transaction".

We'll see what kind of person he is, and I will get the time to get some dinner at a restaurant. Win - win if you ask me.

Make sure to OC when you go out for dinner. That should spark some discussion.

That's about as likely as me wearing a suit!

P.S. Although, I did have the same idea for a second... :):

FYI: We are working out the details now and he is reading this thread - so play nice.

Frankly, he is taking the ribbing far better than most people would. I have to give him credit for sticking with it and not taking too much offense at some of the stuff in the thread.

We will meet soon and have some fun chatting.

Will keep you all updated. Oh, and thanks to the OP for catching this article. It is turning into a great opportunity for all.

I'll admit, I got the "who does this nancy-boy think he is" going when I read the article, but after reading the comments....hey, seems like a decent enough guy.

Kudos to Techres for reaching out! Keep us posted!

I think techres is bucking for esrice's title ("INGO Diplomat")!!

Good on ya, tech. You are a real credit to the site and to hoosier gun owners in general. We should all be thankful you have decided to use your powers for good instead of EEEE-VILLE. ;)

Oh, and I neglected to say...

"His big hand shook my hand and a shiver crept up the length of my skinny arm that I couldn’t adequately explain to myself, but which had something to do with the determined look in his eyes."

The misrepresentations in the article were probably pre written.
    Biased going in.
"There were security 'girls' at the counter" - Not the typical table full of IMPD.

Write your story first then try to find "something" to say you
were right. He has a promising career ahead a MSNBC.

Hopefully techres will set him straight (not very likely but I like to hope).

ATTN FENWAY, PLEASE UPDATE YOUR SIG ACCORDINGLY! :D

One thing I got from this article that libs don't like / feel uncomfortable with such a blatant lack of security. He held open his bag going in and out and was surprised that it wasn't searched.

It's a mindset thing. They have a lack of Independence, an acceptance of outside control, a comfort gained with an overlooking nanny-type entity.

Any conservative/liberty-loving person (note that I didn't say Republican) would not offer their bag for search, nor would care if the security table was empty. In fact they (and I) would bristle at a cadre of officers and baggage checks.

I also notice that he had racist-colored glasses - enabling him to spot racist bogeymen everywhere - the same view-distorting spectacles that I have been seeing on the left since November.

Aside from his liberal pansiness :): (I keed, I keed), the author sounds like a good guy. I have close friends a lot more liberal and un-accepting of opposing viewpoints than he.

And Obama fingers? that IS weird, I don't care who you are. (Then again I don't fit into the redneck gun-owner stereotype he tried so hard to reinforce.)

    Next to Lars
Techres, also be sure to point out in regards to the Nazi memorabilia that a lot of that is sold with WWII re-enactments in mind. You can't have everyone fight on the good side. A good friend of Lars actually does those re-enactments as a general German foot soldier (not SS) because then he can be involved in more events rather than just the special ones where the SS forces were actually used. And thank you for reaching out to Mr. Considine!

And to Mr. Considine himself -- that pink gun thing is good marketing! It's how I overcame my fear of guns spontaneously exploding. Of course, now I just buy my guns in their natural black state and have plans to have them coated pink. They're less intimidating to me that way, but the paper I shoot at is certainly much more afraid. ;)

I went Friday so I can't say how things were Saturday. The last three gunshows I have seen more minorities than in years past.
Friday there was a healthy amount of non-whites in the building shopping.

Gunshows are not racist by design. Last time I checked there wasn't a Group qualification requirement at the door? Anyone with $10 could enjoy the show.

I hope Mr. Considine hangs around and checks out INGO with an open mind.
