I field strip and clean all of my guns every time I shoot them. As for wiping them down, try this Tuf-Cloth It is designed for and used buy the U.S. Navy Seals! I have used it for awhile and am very happy with it.
Not very often, I'm pretty lazy. My carry pistol (S&W 637), I'll check it over every once in a while, make sure there isn't any lint or anything in it. My shotguns, I think I last cleaned my 870 12ga. 3 years ago when I dropped it in a creek turkey hunting, I've never cleaned my 20ga. 870. AK's, pretty much never, I don't remember the last time I cleaned any of mine. I do clean my hunting rifles after shooting a bunch. I will clean my guns after being out in the rain or snow though or if it gets dropped in a creek like my shotgun.
I clean my carry when it gets shot. It's an XD so it's not like it's finicky 1911 or a gLock
If I know I won't be shooting something for awhile, I give it a heavy dose of oil. Thats it.
I've got a golden rod in the safe, so why bother.
I do remember back when I had a handful of guns I'd take them out an dclean them once a month, fired or not... lol... newbie worries. Unless you store them in the basement or something don't be so anal. I've got guns I haven't touched in 2 years or more.
FWIW storing a gun in a carry case (especially todays cheap chinese foam lined junkers) isn't the best of ideas. I'd sooner stand mine barrel up the closet than leave it in a cheap case indefinately.
