Wonder how all the Global warming pundits will chime in this year as the numbers start rolling in showing that it's been a cooler year throughout the US than last year.

Just 2012 vs 2013 numbers for Indiana in the month of March in Central Indiana....

Much too small of a time frame for it to matter.

That applies to both the pro- and anti- global warming folks.
But the global climate people had said at the start of this year that if we didn't have a warmer year this year it would begin to appear that all of their models were incorrect. It has been a decade now of basically flat climate change, so at the end of this year we will officially be outside their predictive margins.

A few points, that most folks (at least the ones that follow this debate) may already know:

    1) Climate has very little to do with daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly temperatures. The time scale for climate is much longer.
    2) The temperature in Indiana is interesting, but only one data point.
    3) Models are useful, but not infallible.
    4) The "Global Climate Change/Warming" folks are talking about world-wide averages, not local temperatures. It is perfectly possible that there could be localized cooling, even though the global average is rising.

What is interesting... .This year (so far) was actually the 7th warmest (this century) globally, 15th warmest nationally, and 35th warmest in Indiana. So, while it may feel cooler, it is actually in the top 1/3 (easily) warmest years in the last century (thus far). All this based on NOAA data (go check it yourself).

So, yes, the yearly global average temp has been trending higher in recent years, since about 1980 or so.

No, it has not always been trending up. It was actually trending DOWN from the 1940's to the early 1980's. Anyone remember the "Global Cooling" scare in the 80's? I do.

It is also trending DOWN from about 2000 until now, with an outlier in 2012 (a pretty darn warm year)

The OVERALL trend from 1900 until now is up.

I'll let other folks argue about what this all means!

    What about from 1000AD until now? 500AD? 5000BC? 10000BC?

I'm firmly on board with the cyclic climate idea. Ups and downs over 1000s of years.

Well, that is an entirely different question. At those time scales, the planet has been notably warmer and colder than today. There have been glaciers over much of North America and Europe, and balmy seas in the same locations. It will likely happen again. Not on a time scale we will witness, though.

Indeed. Or hopefully anyway. I'd hate to walk outside next week and see a glacier in the front yard. That would just ruin my day. :D
