So I know there are a few purpose made backpacks for SBRs/pistols that can carry shorter barreled ARs but I'm not doing anything with AR pistols currently until the new "rule" from the ATF comes down later this year.

Anyone use some kind of normal pack from a sporting goods store or somewhere not intended for firearms that they've modified that they use to carry a broken down AR? Any recommendations?

I'd love to find a duffle bag that's right at the 34" length but that would still sort of look odd carrying around compared to a backpack.

Post your set up if you've got a good one, I really want to get a pack going so I can have a full size AR in the car with me whenever I'm out.

Considering chopping my barrel and going for a p/w 16" just to get it to fit in better options, that way I'll only need a 24-25" pack. Law folder is out of the question for me just because I've seen/heard of problems using them and I'd rather avoid any and all extra possibilities of failure from my guns. I'll probably get one and use it on a cheap carry pistol if the braces aren't going to be banned but I can't see the future yet.

Getting a LAW folder greatly increases your options. I have a Sneaky Bags Spyder and a Vertx XL Sling 2.0, but wouldn't mind a First Speer Descreet pack.

I initially didn't like the Vertx, but it's growing on me since I found it can hold two rifles (or one rifle, chest rig, medical, optic, etc.). It's not Sneaky Bags quality, but it's pretty decent.

I know the law folder adds tons of possibilities but I just don't feel comfortable with them as there have been some people with issues after installing them. Maybe not right away, and it is very few, but I like to eliminate any extra parts that could break or create issues.

My luck guarantees I would have an issue, but only the one day I'd ever have a bad enough situation to need the firearm for a real situation.

Although it’s not gonna win any awards for sexiness or sneakiness, I have a Savior Equipment Specialist Covert 30” case/backpack for my work rig, an 11.5” bbl pistol with a chest rig and spare mags and such. If looks aren’t the main selling point and you need a smaller bag/case that can hump a pistol/SBR and supplemental equipment, it’s a solid choice.

Take a look at UTG's Alpha Battle Carrier Sling Pack. Coming from UTG/Leapers this bag is very heavy duty and well thought out. Has external zip pockets for plenty of spare mags and handgun. UTG/Leapers gets a lot of flack that is deserved but this bag is the exception. You can find them on sale sometimes for $50 or less. They come in 30" and 34" Its padded and great to put in your trunk and not worry about it. Doesn't scream tactical bag.

    Googlfu search.

My mini Draco with folding brace and four extra 30 round mags all fits into a normal run of the mill Jansport book bag. Heavy though.

There is merit in your thinking about a pinned and welded barrel. Few years back I built the shortest and lightest carbine I could within reason. Ended up with Faxon’s 14.5 pin/weld gunner barrel. Inch and a half shorter doesn’t seem like much but now that I try and go back to using a 16” plus hider, seems so much longer. The 14.5 goes in a vehicle much easier. No doubt will pack easier as well.

If I had a nitride barrel on my dream gun it would already be done.

That whole old wives tale about cutting chrome lined barrels flaking and ruining the accuracy scares me because if there's any merit or possibility of either happening- with MY luck - it would 100% happen to me.

Quality barrels being in such short supply, plus $400 for this one in question makes me still hesitant.

I wish Criterion just made a fluted 14.5 nitride barrel.

How about the carry case sleeve for a folding chair?

    That might attract attention.

When was the last time you saw somebody walking around carrying a folding camp chair?

I carry my AR Pistol in a Wilson tennis bag. going in and out of a hotel with other luggage it looks perfectly normal.

If it's just going to be riding in the trunk of the car, wouldn't any range bag work? No need to get too hung up on small.
It isn't going to be in the trunk all the time. Guess I should have clarified that.

I think the Savior 34 is what I'll probably end up with until I find a BRN 180 on here and then I'll just buy one of those probably.

Or build an upper with the above mentioned integrated flash hider Faxon pencil barrel and just use that with a lower from another build. Or a whole new one. Everyone could always use another gun, right...

Is it a pistol AR? I want to go this route but I doubt they make 34" cases. IDEALLY I'd like to carry it assembled but if it comes down to it I'll just break it down. It's just 2 pins but I'd rather not have to wait should the need arise. Might not have 2 pins of time.

In my experience, I haven't ever seen anyone walking around with any style of bag that I thought could have possibly held an AR with a 16" barrel in it, unless it was broken down. People who bother with bags, or backpacks, tend to want smaller ones, so a big one is gonna get noticed... At least it would by me, and most likely by law enforcement. If you have to stay away from the Law Tactical folder (and I think it's silly to) then maybe go for a 14.5" with a pin & welded muzzle device to keep it as short as possible, then carry it broke down. Me, I'll stick with my 10.5" SBR, or pistol, folded up nicely in a small bag.

    Would that work?
This would definitely throw people off and most wouldn't even think a firearm was in it.

Buy a nasal cannula and run it into the bag and put it on loosely and people would think you are carrying your oxygen :):
    And use a walker...
