NEWS RELEASE: Bloomington Police Arrest Man for Attempted Murder
On January 19th at approximately 1:16 a.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of N Arlington Park Drive in reference to multiple 911 callers reporting several shots fired in the parking lot area of the apartment complex. Upon the arrival of officers, several people were outside, but refused to cooperate with the investigation or provide any information about who was responsible for the shooting. Officers were unable to locate any victims, but did locate a parked vehicle with what appeared to be a bullet hole in the rear bumper.
On January 20th, investigators returned to the area and were able to locate several spent 9mm shell casings. Further, investigators were able to review surveillance footage from the apartment complex. The footage showed a man and a woman get into a physical altercation, then showed the man shooting multiple times at the female as she ran through the parking lot. The shooter then fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
Investigators were able to eventually identify the shooting suspect as Travis L. Holmes (35, Bloomington). On January 27th at approximately 1:50 p.m., Holmes was located in an apartment in the 1300 block of W 12th Street and was taken into custody without incident.
After interview, Travis Holmes was transported to the Monroe County Jail and remanded to jail custody for the following charges:
    -Attempted Murder; level 1 felony
-Possession of Firearm by Serious Violent Felon; level 4 felony
    -Criminal Recklessness; level 5 felony
    ###
Under Indiana law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

I Googled him just for confirmation, but it was what I expected. Just wish the book would get thrown at a "serious violent felon' who possesses a gun and attempts murder. Instead, he will likely get free college.

I'm struggling to understand what kind of lesson we're supposed to take away from this.

    1. Witnesses will not be of any help.
    2. Cameras are everywhere. If you think you will just walk away, guess again.
    3. Bad guys don't care about laws. (That is why they are bad guys) Bad guys don't fight "fair".
    4. Attempted murder over a simple "fight". See point 3 about bad guys not fighting "fair".

That simple, what you thought was going to be a bar (fist) fight because some dude bumped into you and spilled your drink ended up with you being stabbed or shot.

Don't let your ego get you killed. You do not know what others have going on in their head.

That probably works both ways I would think

Anyway, I do agree with most of your points.

I feel like most people that regularly carry a firearm "legally" already keep their ego in check and don't regularly try to get into fist fights at the bar.

The rest is understanding your states self defense laws and how they get interpreted. Legal self defense in Indiana might not get you charged or go to trial where it would in other states even if the charges ultimately get dropped.
