Beside filling up my car early and getting more gas for the snow blower, I didn't do anything different than I normally do. Really, a foot of snow? So the frack what! And I've work outside in the cold weather were expecting. Get over it already.
My pre-winter storm prep routine:
Woke up today at about 0400, let the dogs out.
Made coffee
Went outside, Drank coffee and had a smoke while checking INGO
Fed and watered the chickens. Picked up eggs
Drank more coffee, had another smoke, surfed INGO some more
Showered and dressed
Installed 4 sheets of slat wall, hung shelves, mirrors, and pictures while my wife painted trim and doors to help out a friend who just re-opened her tanning salon at a new location in B-town.
Topped off my trucks diesel on the way home.
Our winter storm preps were pretty much ready a long time ago. No French Toast in my house, wife is allergic to cinnimon.
I did start the genny just to make sure it wasn't going to fail me if we needed it.
I must admit it was a zoo here in Ft. Wayne!
We went out to pick up the grand daughter for a sleep over-
Headed over to Krogers because I was pretty much out of gas! Holy Crap waited for probably a good 15min before I even reached the pump!
Then a quick stop at Krogers for a couple needed items, it was a mad house. Crazy in my opinion, Im not even from Indiana, Im a transplant
and I dont even worry this much! Hell...Im still wearing shorts!!
Regardless, people around here seem to panic a bit more than Im use to seeing, I understand the worry and the temperatures dropping, but proper planning
for occasions like this will prevent mass chaos at the grocery. Waiting for the last minute is NOT the way to do things.
I had the realization a while ago that I work tomorrow and we normally buy our food at work day by day and with others freaking out we may not have much to choose from when we go to get food for tomorrow. We may be eating whatever is left on the shelves.
No trips to the grocery store for me. I did however put some Heet into the gas of both the car and truck, checked all fluid levels and made sure we had plenty of gas. Also moved a good pile of wood into the garage and a couple arm fulls inside the house. Went ahead and pulled out one of my big heavy duty tarps and covered my wood pile outside too. Salt, shovels, beer, and liquor on standby.
I hope all works out with nothing more than a snow storm. But the issue is electricity. A lot of utility systems still have quite a bit of copper as overhead conductors, in cold temps copper can and will break.
I made sure my parents will not need to go out for a few days, filed up the truck with gasoline and I bought some Reeses "big cups", some cola, and a "stickybuns" bakery item.
We are due to get freezing rain in the AM then the changeover. Plenty of gas for the truck, snoblower and generator. Food and beverage stocked up. Wife has already swapped her afternoon shift tomorrow with someone who needs a weekday off...so we can watch the 49's freeze their butts as Green Bay beats them.
2014 Snowgeddon checklist:
1) 2 stacks of wood for fireplace, tender to start fire, good lighters
2) Food, mres
3) 21 gallons of water, 4 water bottles in fridge
4) Blankets
5) Loaded ammo in mags, loaded firearms
6) 4 bottles of wine, and 1 bottle of Dark Rum.
I made sure the snow blower had gas (I'm too old to shovel) then went to the casino to get rid of some of the extra cash. A new driver head and shaft from Golfsmith were delivered today so I assembled them while watching the Colts squeak by KC. Gonna' watch the Eagles and the Saints now. I plan on leaving the 4WD Tundra in the garage and driving the 2WD Silverado to breakfast tomorrow morning. I think I've done everything I need to do in preparation for the "blizzard". My only concern is that the restaurant has coffee ready when I get there. Your mileage may vary!
