Not sure yet. Also, we know little about the purchaser. Was he on some radar prior to this interaction? All speculation I guess at this point

I think it may have become a thing again now because the Biden administration has said they want to give ATF the resources and the directive to start expanding their role to ferret out potential straw purchases.

Edit: In the video the other agent explains that the reason they are doing this is because of the recent uptick in gun violence. They to want to make sure to track down any potential straw purchases.

Yep they are allowed to have that conversation with you. You are not obligated to participate. This is what's referred to as a "knock and talk" They can't take it any further (in this context) without a warrant if you refuse to participate.

This sounds alot like when they pulled somebody over (COPS TV show) and say they smell Pot - but then add "if its just a small amount for Personal Use - I dont care" ... after they find it - they put you in Handcuffs and take you to Jail

Abuse. Usually. If not right then, then when you're asleep, after a knock you couldn't possibly hear, and a flash bang that comes right before your hear, "blah! blah! blah!" BANG! Ok, you probably won't hear the bang. But it's your fault for flinching. Even if all the guns they wanted to see are in your gun safe.
