I’d enjoy the help. I actually wrote a story about someone helping me once, it’s here on INGO somewhere.

"Booze shoplifting/bottle throwing/squirmy perp, citizen who didn't stick around after the assist" IIRC.

It's come up from time to time. Just ask. "Officer do you want me to help" or similar if possible. That also helps protect you in some states, as you are now acting under the Leo's umbrella.

I've had civilians ask and I had them take handcuffs off my belt for me and help cuff when I could hold someone but not spare a hand to cuff. I know of an incident where an armed security guard intervened in an officer's ongoing gun battle after asking if he wanted help.

Now that's good info to know. Hopefully this won't happen, but it's good to know if it ever does.

to shrug off two hits with a tazer and not seem to feel it? Must have had a whole pharmacy in his blood.

The guy was wearing a winter coat, you can hear the Taser sparking. A tell tale sign that at least one probe did not make contact and with an incomplete contact, the Taser is worthless. When I teach Taser to new recruits, I tell them that our own agency's statistics tells us that the Taser is only effective 53% of the time. So when you pull your Taser, know that you have a 50/50 chance of it not being effective. What is your plan B?

More and more these days it seems officers have to go hands on, having proper training in open hand combatives and weapon retention in the clinch is of utmost importance. Oh, and **** a bunch of driving past an officer getting a beat down, I couldn’t respect myself for passing by.

I preach and preach and preach but few officers train on their own time and dime.

This video is a prime example of resistive behavior NOT being controlled early, escalates force. The officer had little fighting skills. Not saying the officer did anything wrong, but his training tape ran out quick. I am of the opinion that a higher level of training by the officer could have allowed him to use a lower level of force. The officer's inability to control the suspect early and effectively forced the officer to use deadly force, justifiably. Bad tactics lead to good shootings. Lots of officers don't agree with me but I stand by the opinion.

I could not just drive by. The cars that just driveway are a symptom with what is going wrong in the USA. As long as I am safe in my little world, I am ok. Worries me if and when the time ever comes when we, as a collective society, have to defend ourselves. The same people who drive by will be the first to complain why didn't anyone comer to my rescue...sad state of affairs.

Thinking about what an attorney might have thought or done would not have even entered my mind. I would have piled on out of instinct.

Some people are just scared of getting sued by the family of the individual or depending on the state, winding up in jail (if they decided to shoot the individual)

Wow some of our heavy hitter LEO INGOTS VD, BBI, Denny have spoken!

Why do I have a mental picture of Denny “babysitting” quite a bit?

    Brad’s
    Rules for helping LEO’s
    1. Ensure it’s a LEO don’t wanna get involved in someone else’s circus (a INGO LEO taught me that).
    2. I am getting old and will not fight for more than one minute if I cannot achieve the clinch or a rear naked choke in one minute I gonna escalate. I am also known to gouge eyes, bite ears, break fingers and such I will blame all injuries on the LEO.
    3. If he or she is on top of you I am going to kick them in the head 50% chance I will be wearing steel toes.
    4. I normally have a old school 4 cell mag light you owe me a bulb if I beak it.
    5. If I have to fire to stop the threat (hold still) it’s going to be contact shot if possible.

I can’t imagine not stopping to offer help but there is a chance that many of those that did drive by were not capable of helping or could have made the issue worse had they stopped. If it’s a 20 something mom with a baby in the back seat, I would not criticize her for getting her kid out of there. Same goes if it were an 90 year old woman that would just give the cop another person to worry about protecting.

Now, being after midnight, chances are that those were not little old ladies coming home from mass or young mothers bringing their newborns home from a grocery trip, but not everyone could or should try to jump in.

Good advice given up thread about asking the officer if he wanted help. I would not have thought about that and might have just jumped in to try to help.

One question though: If you are carrying and the cop is grappling with the suspect, how do you help? You cannot take a shot with the cop in harms way. Do you draw and give the guy a command to cease or you’ll say cease again?

If you jump in, and the perp discovers a pistol on your hip, he may go for your gun. Do you stick it his ear and pull the trigger? If the cop is on his back, and the attacker is on top of him, there will be a shot but if both are rolling around, it could be tough.

Draw or don’t draw if there’s no clear shot yet. If you don’t draw, do you jump in with a pistol on you or what?

There are a bizzillion variations on what could happen, so I know that there’s no real answer to this, but am curious as to what folks are thinking.

What kind of punishment do people like this guy get for assaulting an officer of the law in a court? Do they get a slap on the wrist or do most judges throw the inadequate book at them? Of course the ones not fatally shot. IMO anyone that is crazy enough and have no respect for the law should be locked away to protect society from them.

At the very least, I would stop and monitor the altercation. Make sure I called 911 and if it looked as if the LEO was gonna go down, I would take my ball and bat from my auto and start swinging. (since I just came from a baseball game and had them in my car). If I was coming home from my imaginary stock boy job, I'd pull out my boxcutter and see how I could help. There are other imaginary scenarios that may allow me to exhibit my tools of the trade....

Drugged up jihadi and nobody stops to help. SMH

If that's you're definition of "jihadi", then you probably need to include every Florida Man into that category.

Hands-on and firearm retention training ain't just for cops...

In my experience, around here it's really just considered part of the job by the court system and not much really happens. It would probably get dropped to disorderly conduct.
