Funny story though about Marines. A buddy of mine is a Marine. I was talking to his wife the other day about joining the Navy and she asked what made me want to join. I said something like well you know, probably the same reason your husband joined the Marines. Her reply was I doubt it. he joined on a dare.

    How about MARINES ?????

Marines are just soldiers who spent a little longer in the spin cycle during brainwashing:n00b:

Just kidding, Marines are great! I did my fair share of "Air Force appreciation time" while in the field with the grunts and learned some great lessons. Two of them are, "Soldiers and Marines will always have your back" and "don't trust Joe" ;-)

The first missile shoot I ever saw was from the Leahy class cruiser USS Dale launching one of those huge two stage SM-2ER birds.
They were several miles away, but the noise was incredible.
I never thought I would miss it.
Boy, was I ever wrong. :(

That's what I was in for.. GMM2, worked on the MK-10, Mod-0 GMLS. We shot the SM-2ER's. It was fun shooting, but after it was chip & paint. :xmad:

Tried to join the Marines, but recruiter told me because I could dig a ditch and think for myself I was over qualified. So, I joined the Navy. :):

    Sounds about right!

Never heard of the SH-60 or the S-3 Viking huh? Those would be sub hunters and every Carrier Battle Group has many of them routinely looking for targets. ;)

and 9 out of 10 times fail to detect the threat until after the exercise is concluded.
That is true. About the only way to get a general position on a U.S. sub is from a "flaming datum". They are so damn quiet you almost have to look for the absence of noise.

A very effective weapons system. If properly utilized the enemy aircraft would have about 5 seconds to realize he was being targeted before it came down from above and blew him to pieces. ;)

The choppers were nice don't get me wrong.
But the best anti-sub was a sub escort. But they are hampered by the gang of loud blind people topside.
Then a surface platform might catch a sniff. And air assets were good to check out the ghost.

I am painfully aware of the green flares. I have seen far to many of them. ;)

I remember an exercise just outside the STROG where I had them lay a line of sonobouys and then we cut circles on the other side while a P-3 monitored the bouys. When the CO came into combat and saw I was using the ship as a decoy he about had a stroke. Hey, it worked. :yesway:

hooh ya! Another fine Navy day!

When I was in 15 year ago...... We would say "Have a fine Navy day" to anyone that we didn't like....Say like the Chief. It was slang for F You.

One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned yet. Watch your pay. They call them the LES, Leave and Earning Statement. Ensure you are getting paid at the correct grade and are receiving the correct amount of money for BAH. No one else but YOU is going to check on this. BTW, if there is a screw up and you get overpaid, the navy will pull it back all at one leaving you with a check of 5 bucks. If they screw up and owe you money, expect it take 2-4 months to be corrected.

1 year 7 months for me. Had to request a formal Captains Mast to finally straighten it out.

Thanks for the tip on buying a car. I'm halfway considering buying a car down there only because I won't have worry about rust. (As much.) If I do I'll make sure to buy it well away from Pensacola. Before considering even considering a car, check with the base regulations. Some commands did not allow E1 to E3 to even park on the base.
No contract buying for me. I think I've pretty much got everything that I'll need ready to go. I'm going to pack a small bag with all that stuff, (laptop etc.) And have my wife bring it to the airport when I fly from boot to ASchool.
Be very careful about your stuff, never leave things laying about even in your own room. They will get stolen.

If you are planning to have your wife and kids join you after your schools, you might think about passports as they might be needed.

It was between 1989 and 1990, probably the first year, as we decommissioned my own ship in April of 1990 and spent most of that year coating nearly everything in cosmoline.
