All my childhood nightmares. Falling, Falling off a bridge, Falling of a high bridge in to water, drowning.
A tragedy for all lost souls.
My first wife and I used to ride my motorcycle to Bethany Beach for the weekend, maybe twice a month when we were young. Crossing the Chesapeake Bridge I would ride on the grates so we could look down at the boats, she would tighten up from looking down and hearing the tires "sing" from the steel grates.

A local ship's pilot was in control of the ship. At all US ports a 'pilot' takes control to move ships into/out of the ports because they know the waters and the hazards.

Video shows 2 power losses, lots of smoke, and the ship changing direction just before the crash.

Forgive my ignorance but could the thick smoke be acceleration?
Either trying to slam the brakes with reverse thrust, or accelerating to regain steerage and get water passing over the rudder. After the first power loss they probably freaked out when they realized control was lost and they were headed for the pylon. I'm guessing they tried to reverse and stop. Literally the worst possible time to lose control. It's not a car, without power they lost rudder control completely.

This was not intentional. If it were some kind of terrorist attack, why not do it about 10 hours later during rush hour? Another few hundred people dead at least.
It's not always about mass loss of life. Creating chaos and possible long term major inconvenience for all the shipping/transportation in that area is way more damaging than killing a couple hundred people...

So a ship loses power, there’s no rudder control? No back up system?
There's no physical lever or wheel on the bridge that can turn the rudder without power. The rudder weighs several tons and has to fight the flow of water, it needs power, and presumably hydraulics.

I'm not sure to what extent engineering can force it to move manually, but there clearly wasn't time to even begin communicating a need. Additionally, without power they're at the mercy of the current. Kind of like how a plane can't really do an unpowered crosswind landing without the ability to power into the wind direction. If the current was carrying them into the pylon they couldn't "glide" out of the way on inertia anyway, without power the ship will mostly just skid.

Some large ships (no idea about this one) have maneuvering thrusters fore and aft that can push the bow or stern perpendicular to its path, that is, they can push the ship sideways, or rotate the ship on its axis. These are used to lessen (or eliminate) the need for tugs to maneuver in tight quarters.

Now, pure speculation, what if the ship was moving forward and was counting on the thrusters to nudge it sideways to get under the center section of the bridge, but then the front thrusters (or both) failed...then momentum just takes you.

    Again, 100% speculation.
