To be fair, that picture is from the rain delayed spring race in 2017. Attendance and viewership has been up lately, certainly not back to stunning numbers, but it is trending upwards.
Picking up from 2023, which was the lowest ratings in the history of Nascar. When comparing this year to any year before last season, its still a decline.

Instead of everyone making excuses for nascar (not you, just fans in general) they need to accept the fact viewership is down and focus on why so that they can fix it.

Bristol used to be packed house at every event. I remember it snowing at the track and the stands were still packed full. Drivers were on pit road throwing snowballs at fans.

I watched the old southern 500 from 1986 on youtube last night as i was laying down for bed. After the race the drivers were interviewed and actually gave honest opinions about the racing, car, and sanctioning body. Now, they get fined if they say anything negative about the sport. Thats one of many reasons people are tuning out

But there is a thread on INGO that says all is utopia…

Ya, thats why attendance last season was a record low and they were still saying how its a non issue. Everyone wanted to point at the tv deal as the sport is saved. Sponsors pay for the advertisement. This is why big drivers have bigger paying sponsors, because the likelihood of their sponsorship being seen is increased. When the viewership and attendance is a record low 1 season, and then barely beating it this season, sponsorships lower the amount they are willing to pay… some even deciding to no longer sponsor a team altogether.

If the sport was as good as ever, we wouldnt even be having these discussions. Sponsors would be fighting to sponsor teams, not leaving.

I dont fault a fan for being a fan of a sport they love. But claiming there is no problem when there obviously is does not help the sport you claim to love. It hurts it, and wont improve.

To me the best era of NASCAR was the race on Sunday, sell Monday time frame. That's when rules books were thin and drivers had great big helmets. (Helmets isn't what I meant, but...)
    426s, 427s, 429s, funky aerodynamics (but effective).

    Better still was Can-Am.
Fenders, two possible driving/passenger positions, some ridiculously low weight restriction, unlimited internal combustion engine, one human capapable (willing) to climb in and race it for a couple of hours.

See, UOP Shadow, Chaparral, McClaren, Porsche and Lola.

    Truth.

Old school nascar helped the car industry evolve in so many ways. There were always engineers trying to get a few more horsepower than the next guy.

Now its a overweight formula 1 car with a bunch if insecure executives that dont allow their drivers to have a negative opinion. Wonder whats gonna happen when the big teams owners pass away. Childress Hendrick Penske… they arent young anymore

There are still millions to pocket so the executives will continue to milk the cow.

Hey, @greg isn't it funny how you can tell the difference between when nascar was a growing sport and a declining sport by their actions? In a growing sport they innovated, spoke their minds, fought in public. In the decline of nascar innovation is tightly controlled, the message is tightly controlled, participants cannot speak their minds.

Loyalty is dead in society it is foolish to believe that newer owners will have the loyalty of those that by the sweat of their brow built the peak of almost twenty years ago. If you build something you treasure it differently than joining something someone else built.

This race is amazing. I had it on tv while working in the garage and couldnt stop watching. Wife came out and I was sitting in the recliner watching the race instead of working.

Bobby Allison lost his steering wheel, spins. Phil Parsons runs to his car (wrecked earlier) and takes his steering wheel out, runs thru the pits and gives Bobby his wheel.

Watching Darrel Waltrip race to get his lap back. Watching the top and bottom groove run side by side for 10 laps. Petty and Earnhardt battling for 2nd, Dale on the top Richard on bottom neither could get the edge.

Just amazing racing. I would love to go back to this. What we have now it pathetic.

I was thinking of tuning in to tomorrows race just to see the crowd size but I don’t want to give @greg another viewer, he would claim viewership doubled…

This one could be really good. I understand this week's race is a road course.

If you would enjoy something like watching a rhino run after it had its front left knee and rear right knee shot out, this could be the race to see. Road courses are where Nascar really shines.

I was going to watch it, but then I found out it starts at 3:30.... same time I am scheduled to watch paint dry in the living room.

    Oh well, maybe next time.
