It just goes down the shaft and then back up!

You might look into “alternating tread” stairs; they’re suitable for “restricted spaces” and can be steeper than conventional stairs.
I looked at a boat that had cabin steps like that, HELL no!
On a related note. If you ever get tired of Elf on a Shelf duty, this gets you out of it.
This is what I’ve come up with. The board is marked at 8/8 at a 45* angle. Trying not to have such high rise but still trying to have a decent tread step. It’ll be 9”. The old stairs had 7” tread depth and 7” rise. With this board marked it’s got 10 steps plus a little extra on bottom. Going to go 6 steps which puts me right at the left side of the concrete block pillar. Then do 2 winders and a couple more steps out into the basement. Head clearance I think will be ok unless you’re over 6’ tall.

That was the old entrance to the basement through the pantry. Going to put a wall in there and have the pantry closed off. The door comes from the kitchen. Going to have a slide barn door style door. And then pocket door for the pantry.
