    Never mind.

I would probably be more receptive if you weren't so condescending.

Yes I've seen a woobie. Use one regularly as part of warmer weather kits. Have a nice bedroll project using one. It's a modern type with upgraded features (zippers, grommets, etc.) over the issued version. Huncho brand if memory serves.

I typically use a 9' x 9' tarp for shelter, in a myriad of configurations. The aim this trip is continuity since it's a thru-hike. No tinkering.

    In the country, hopefully.
Unfortunately the forest service has proposed essentially ended camping out on the peninsula:

As there really isn’t anywhere you can be 1/2 mile from the lake.

I’m also not really sure of the jurisdictional aspect of this since I believe the pool area of the lake is ACoE, but there may be aspects of that I’m not aware of.
So how many of those sites at the end of the trail are official designated sites?

Picked up a cheap $17 rain fly for the pack. The included one doesn't fit with bedrolls, and it's crap anyway. This one is much nicer. Elastic around the opening, as well as straps/buckles.

I did chose to drop the GI poncho from the load, as I have this now and am taking my good rain jacket. The forecasted temps also had me upgrade a pair of thermals to something heavier.

That’s not this weekend is it? (Not that next weekend is going to be any better…)

A wet, but nice weekend for the first outing of '24. Did not get too cold, and the wind was lower than posted.

2.1 mi hike from Lookout Tower to Terrill Ridge Pond (site #6). 1hr almost on the button, stakes in at 1030a. Rain started around 3, sunset around 550p. A large tarp and some fashioned poles mustered up a fine "long house" for our group cover. We never had to setup or tear down in the rain, and the walks were sans weather as well. All in all, a good weekend to test the mettle.

What kind of backpack do you guys recommend? I've been looking around but can't find anything I think would be good for what I need (about 25 pounds of gear)

Check out Rusted Moon Outfitters in Broadripple. That’s just an average, normal backpacking pack size, shouldn’t be hard to find, but they have excellent fitters which is key.

We have our permits for IR (isle royale) in June. 4 other eagles and my sons a Life scout. Great insight here for our packs and planning. 6 nights off grid, anyone ever done IR? They allow firearms, but sounds pretty strict.

Without spending loads of $, there are several "budget brands" I can recommend. REI co-op is a good start, Kelsey, and I've been VERY happy with my Teton 65L pictured.

When I started backpacking, I used an 80s vintage external frame pack that i'd picked up for $5 at a rumage sale years before. I added a new waist belt, from Amazon, since all it had was a small webbing belt. After a few trips with that, it helped me zero in on what I really wanted in a pack. Now I mostly use my ULA Catalyst 75 L pack. It’s only 3lbs, and I can hike in the summer with 16lb base weight, or I can take it deer hunting in HNF stuffed full of cold weather clothes. Only change I’ve made is to take off one of the waist belt pouches and added a bigger one with a retention holster for my 9mm Shield inside it.
