I was in a mood to trade when I stumbled across this 455. CZ 455 Varmint Evolution with 3 barrels; .22 LR, .22 WMR, and .17 HMR. Fortunately, my trade goods covered this rifle and a Henry H001M.

I plan to top the 455 with a Vortex Viper PST-II (3-15x44 FFP) and start shooting teeny tiny groups.

Now, rather than make me go back through all the old CZ threads, would those of you who are into this sort of shooting, please repost your current bench rest rig? Maybe even your less expensive rigs that would be a solid starting point?

My current go-to for bench shooting is a bipod and rear bag. I've only had the bull bag clone out once and it was too low. I've since made a riser base for it and plan to retest.

I no longer have the Caldwell rest setup and Protektor rests. Good setup, but just not suited for me. I have shot with some fancy expensive rests and I like the Hybrid-X from 21st Century the most.

    Uber cool!

I will argue than you can get 95% to 100% of what is needed from the right set of front and rear bags (https://wiebadgear.com/product-category/shooting-bags/benchrest-bags/).

Bulls Bags are a favorite of even though I don't have one anymore. Might not be the best option for that stock setup?

Some people shoot well with a front bipod (IMO pony up and buy an Atlas level bipod if you want to shoot teeny tiny groups) and a rear bag like above. I don't.

The Caldwell is a good adjustable front rest. You can spend more and not really get much more (IMHO) or spend ALOT and get some more.

My current rest is a Lenzi front rest and a Protektor rear rest. Both of which are awesome. Protecktor makes a great rear rest for use with an front adjustable front rest. My other set up is a pair of Crosstac bags. FAR ends of price spectrum!

Just a comment...if you want to shoot teeny tiny groups, you might want more scope. For 22 benchrest at 50 yards, I would look at 20 plus. You sure can do it with less but more be better imo. :-)

1710684003831.jpeg My setup for my 457 MTR with Rock BR and Protektor rear bag. Bag rider not allowed in ARA bench competition for factory class so don’t use one but I think it could help. My scope is a 4-24 Vortex StrikeEagle (discontinued that I got for $300). I have actually considered going up to a 30x scope for 50 yard bench shooting.

I agree that the Caldwell The Rock BR front rest and a rear bag is a very good place to start. I would suggest getting the rubber feet pads and you may want to get a different front bag for the rest that better "cuddles" the rifles forend.

Get ready to spend $$ on higher end Lapua or Eley ammo.

First off, thank you all for your quick reponses about the bench rest equipment. This has been imensely helpful.

Unfortunately, I am now reconsidering this course of action ... anybody interested in a CZ 455 Varmint Evolution with 3 barrels?

Nah, who am I kidding? It's just going to take a bit longer to get where I want to be. Like anything else that I've started, I'll need to make due with what I have readily available and slowly add to the kit.

Lapua and Eley are where I need to start with ammo? Yikes! So, is it standard velocity or something else that I want to be looking for?

    My 457 prefers Lapua Center-X.

I don't have a fancy setup by any means. It's still very enjoyable and produces good results (for my low skill level anyway).

I have shot some very small groups with SK standard plus and Eley Team. Both are “more affordable” ”good” ammo, but not cheap (last sk I bought was $80 for a 500 round brick IIRC). You may need to experiment to see what your rifle likes but mine likes standard velocity a bit on the slower side but all barrels are different. When I compete I tend to use Eley Tenex or SK Rifle match, both mid tier match ammo. My rifle likes various flavors of Lapua but supplies to test various lots have been limited. That said I have seen some post pretty small groups using CCI SV or Norma Tac22 but expect a few more flyers.
