    I would have thought confederate statues could have gone to some sort of military park rather than melted for scrap. Even Iron Felix went to one of those but I understand he is back in the city somewhere now.

    Many of those men were held in high regard by half the country because they fought valiantly and were true to a cause they believed in, but I can see why yankees would want make it only about slavery and to cover up the ***-kicking they got for the first three years of that war

    It's like he never left. The Yankees didn't make it only about slavery - the Confederates did. Don't believe the Lost Causers - just go read the Articles of Secession, written by the rebels themselves at the time (not 100 years later by revisionist apologists).
    "Peculiar institution" = slavery.
    And at sea (plus on the rivers), all the ***-kicking was done by the Union Navy.
    The war was already over by 1862 when New Orleans was lost through Confederate incompetence and short-sightedness.
