I once knew a gal that was over exercising on a step machine and ended up with physical injuries. I over did it doing free weight squats and ended up with quad tendinitis in one knee and rotator cuff tendinitis doing a different exercise.

I am now so much older so don’t overdo anything except maybe watching Netflix. LOL
Absolutely! But I think it has more to do with chronic overuse and chronic, excessive forces applied to joints. Long-distance runners (joggers, marathoners, and beyond) deal with lots of injuries, most of which develop due to repetitive stress on joints and systemically, chronically high cortisol production. We're designed for high-intensity, brief bursts of work.

As for weights: I am an advocate of heavy and slow, one set to failure, one to two times per week per movement.

The other side of the excersize argument is that, as you hit middle age and beyond, if you don't use it you will lose it.

Joints, cartilage, tendons, etc will break if not supported by adequate muscle structure.

So so so many folks have ailments that contribute to sedentary behavior that could be eliminated by stretching and excersize.

How common is it to see folks "just getting old," with numerous surgeries under their belts for all the joints and back? Often the same folks are on daily regiments of drugs that do all kinds of crap to the body, besides the pain killing.

All of this contributes to us carrying around the extra weight that taxes all of the joints further.

For sure. Sarcopenia is real. The best way to retain/restore muscle mass is to lift heavy things and eat more protein.

OK, weight day. I did not expect any weight loss or expected a gain this week because of the silly amount lost the previous week but still managed to lose 0.6 pounds. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Now 210.8 pounds. Goal is still 195 or thereabouts.

Doing some speed work as my time to exercise has been limited the past two weeks with a road trip then being busy at work.

My personal best when actually training for 5k was:

NO where near that pace now, 9:00/mile is not quite in reach. Today:

Sucks having back to back colds. I have a 10k Run-n-Gun event in KY late Feb & need to do some running. I'll be an RSO at this event. It would be great if some fellow INGO'ers attend. This one is called "Heartbreake RnG".

Details are on book of face. Sign up is Dec 1 on Practiscore & it sells out in MINUTES! Be ready!

Well, I'm following the pattern. A week after being 209, it's back to 215, even after being violently ill with a stomach bug over Thanksgiving. It's so hard not to get discouraged. One day I know I'll get down there again, but these 5-6 lb yoyo patterns are making me crazy.

Weight day. 209.8 pounds, down 1 pound this week. For people with short attention spans this takes a looooong time. LOL

It took me a full year to be somewhat satisfied with my appearance. I'm now trying to take it to the next level. If you're going to start a self-improvement routine, one of the first things you need to tell yourself is be patient. It's going to take months to get where you want to be. Keep up the good work!

That drives me nuts too. I don't know what your situation is, but my problem is diet. I don't eat nearly as well as I should. I can't cook, and I don't enjoy cooking, so getting the right food is hard for me. I've got workouts down to a science, but food is just as important, if not more important, than the workouts, so if I could ever get that dialed in, I might really makes some progress.

Yeah, at 70 I have plenty of experience waiting especially after the service, “Hurry up and wait”.

This is my journey so far. 13 years of trying to lose weight counting calories and exercise followed by a significant change in diet and zero exercise. Weight probably as high as 255 before starting this.

My discoveries his year led to significant change. Easier weight loss, inflammation from previous injury significantly reduced, easy wake-up in the morning, much clearer thinking.

Not sure what causes mine. I don't eat a lot, so I can't see where the enormous fluctuations come from. I think I learned in my college nutrition class 179 years ago that it takes an extra 3500 consumed calories to make a pound. I think mine must me more due to actual weight, like water weight.

That much change in a week could be some water weight. Do you use MyFitnessPal? You can enter your data and put in how much weight you want to lose up to two pounds a week and it will tell you how many calories to eat a day. It works as I used a similar program before this one in my forties and got down to 195, my current target wieght.

Since then I found out a calorie is not just a calorie. What you eat is more important. Besides counting calories is not sustainable long term as you can see by my progress over 13 years. That is normal for us humans.

Right now I only use MyFitnessPal to log my weight loss. I don’t count calories any longer. Eat the right foods and you don’t suffer the same hunger pains that kill weight loss. You also help metabolic health.

I recently purchased a book call Metabolical by Dr. Robert H. Lustig, ‘The Lure and the Lies of Processed Foods, and Modern Medicine’. Haven’t started it yet but you can find his videos on YouTube.

Thanks. I used to use MyFitnessPal, but I strayed. I just need to start paying more attention to what I eat. About the only processed food I eat is a PopTart or bowl of cereal in the morning. The rest is either raw veg or stuff cooked from scratch. I suppose I need to pay more attention to the gravy and the potatoes, etc. Just cutting out the potatoes would probably help a lot.

One of the challenges for me is that I am my 90-yr-old Mom's caretaker, and she is extremely underweight. I have to fix food that will keep weight on her while also eating stuff that will take weight off me. (She will not drink Ensure or the like; I've tried.)

Well the pop tart and cereal both increase your blood glucose which raises your insulin level that instructs your body to store the glucose in your cells. Think of sugar as a poison that can kill you.

I avoid all sugar now. I look at ingredients and find it in just about everything processed so I avoid all processed foods. Probably the only thing I eat that might have some minimal amount of sugar is salsa. Also lactose in the heavy cream in my coffee is a sugar so I get some there but that’s it.

I also avoid all trans fats and seed oils. Trans fat is something like margarine. Put margarine outside and even the insects won’t touch it. Trans fats are used because they enhance longevity of the foods.
