    But those tapes do have different spacing - try comparing them every 1/4 inch.
    I'm not so sure. I cut and pasted the images. This makes it clear that the first 1/4" is missing from the top.

    The spacing appears to look different, but it is clear that the 2 pictures of the tapes are taken from different angles. The top edge of the bottom tape is "higher" (closer to the camera) the top tape and we don't know how it would look if the top edge of the lower tape was rotated down, further away from the camera. Likewise, the top edge of the top tape is "higher", that is closer to the camera, while the lower edge is "lower", further away from the camera. Therefore, in the original pic and the pic below, we are comparing an edge further from the camera with one closer to it.

    This problem with angles of the photo and closer to camera versus further away becomes more clear when I compare the top photo to itself. Because the photo is not taken perfectly face-on, it does not even line up with itself:

    I think the angle from the camera explains the whole thing.
