When this country and its economy eventually collapses and we do go back 150 years, I'm going to miss a perfectly cooked hamburger just off the grill.

Or, more accurately, the simplistic ease in which we Americans can obtain, prepare, and enjoy a 6 oz piece of a cow. So few citizens are capable of delivering that 6 ounces of deliciousness using 1870s technology.

I buy really good lean grass fed ground beef, and grind up garlic cloves, pepperoncini peppers and onions with a little bit of red pepper flakes with a little horseradish and mix it all together before I press it into 1/2 pound burgers. I let it set for a little while for all the flavors to mellow together before a quick searing on a hot grill. One of my favorite tastes. You really cannot fry them as there is little fat in them.

Something to be said about a nice big juicy burger, maybe on a Kaiser roll.

Cooking skills have diminished so much now, even with modern technology 90% of restaurant burgers I eat are just well done. It bugs me when a waitor/ress asks how I want my burger and they just bring it well done anyway.

Not really safe to eat a less than medium burger at most places. I ask if they grind meat from whole cuts on location, most do not, they buy factory ground beef either fresh or frozen.

Teds Montana Grill, at Traders Point in Indy, does grind both beef and bison in the restaurant.

Five Guys. Even In-N-Out doesn't compare. That's what I'll really miss.
    And chocolate.
    And hot showers.

Our deer sloppy joes and burgers are still good. Until they get over-hunted and vanish like they did early in the last century.

I can shoot, butcher and grind up the local deer. While it's not the same as burger we do save fat trimmings from purchased meat and grind it into the burger. Coffee would be hard to substitute so I just keep a lot of that in storage.

I've thought about the over hunting aspect of bad times, but think that most people will just simply go to where the government tells them and stand in line to be fed.

Hot showers are easy peasy. Black garbage bag filled with rain water or if you have the means, a hand pump on a deep well / cistern / creek water.

Coffee - meh. I never touch the stuff, but have some good instant for trade. Potential coffee storage space is devoted to chocolate.

To each his own, I'm not a big chocolate eater. That said keeping coffee back as a trade item would be useful, much like alcohol.
