We have several cats at our farm. They get fed everyday. The number varies from a couple to more than I want. We have given some away when there are too many. I am not really a fan, though they are cute and funny. Wife likes them, names them and plays with them so they stay. What ever the wife wants she gets, she is the best.

Have dispatched a couple, one wanted to attack us when we fed it. The third time it bit my hand as I was putting food out it died. They usually keep the place mouse/rat/mole free but have dropped the ball on moles lately. The yard is a mess with them.
Neighbor about 3/4 mile away has 3 large dogs. Two of them are aggressive. The hunter that leases property near us has them on a game cam and called the owner. He notified the DNR, lots of money to have deer spooked by running dogs during hunting season. Last time they showed upon our place one growled at us, I had a 12 gauge full of buck on him but the wife wouldn't let me do it. She has killed feral dogs before but didn't want me to shoot this time.
I am hoping the visit from the DNR has changed the owners habits .

    Don
Again it’s the animal owners. Dogs gonna be dogs.
Unless they are cats and adopt a blind kitten to take care of. That one got me.

On the family farm back in the day an animal had to serve a purpose or it was not needed.
Period. Great grand dad would dispatch one with a quickness. Saw it more than a few times. Even aggressive stock animals. Saw him drop a couple of aggressive sows. At different times.
He said that is just how it is. And every one got some ham and bacon.

There is a fine line between critter control, and being a sadistic a-hole. I'd say the line is crossed when you gleefully tell the owner what you did.

Its your prerogative to dispatch nuisance animals on your property. I dont like it as a cat lover, but its your property. As long as you dont take joy from dispatching them, you are normal. If you ENJOY killing the cats, well... I have nothing good to say about you.

Ive dispatched a couple nuisance cats myself many years ago when I was a teen. They were coming onto our rural property attacking our cat. I didnt relish doing it, but it was necessary.

But to gloat about it to the owner? Thats messed up.
6 pages in and this is the first post hinting at this. Many say marijuana is a transition drug. Killing cats seems to be the start for many mass murderers. How many mass murderers started with cats? Dahmer for sure and I believe BTK did a few cats. I know there are more. I’m confident these two Einsteins will make the front page again.

Gateway drug? Bullish…. If that were true about 6 people know should be dead or strung out on meth, etc. and I’m talking guys in their 50s smoking out since their teens. That’s just hysteria from the 30s.

Now you are onto something about killing animals for fun.

Here's what we deal with on our rural property. The contrast between the fox and the cat gives you an idea of the size. This is not your normal little fluffy fur ball that you love so much. This one met its demise a few nights later when we shined his eyes at night.

People need to stop putting human traits on animals as they are merely that, animals. Some can show affection and be very pet like as they love the warm comfortable security and regular food. But they are still animals.
You know I love ya man, but I’ll tell ya, as soon as my dog finds his phone, he’s gonna be sending you a very harshly worded email!

We had a domestic cat that was 17 lbs and about as big as our cocker spaniel was! Not fat or fluffy just huge. Around 1979 trapping fox I came upon my fox set and thought I had a huge red fox again.....it was a cat, I shot it with the .22 when it growled and hissed at me, no way getting it out that leg hole trap and didn't even want to....I wish I had brought it home for a picture but didn't. The head was huge, at least 3 times as big as our big home cat. I was around 6' tall and held the back legs to my chest and the front feet touched the ground, thats so I could remember something about it. It got dumped in the creek. Later the neighbor trapper told me that year he caught 3 more like mine he said. Figured some kind of super breed ferrel cat. Only year that happened, dang I wish I had got a picture, my guess at the time it was at least 25 lbs.

I met a man that was raised on the 1st farm outside of Lafayette across the Highway. He said for some reason city people think that a farmer wants all the animals people get tired of having, and would drop them in front of their farm. They saw the strays as pests. The man claims he was a draftee in the Army when he found out everyone did not shoot strays on sight.

The one you caught sounds like the Maine Coon my wife used to have, over 20 lbs and huge. She had very long fluffy fur so she looked even bigger. Not my wife, not her cat but just as an example.

I'd love to have a Maine Coon, but unless I happen to find one in a shelter, it probably won't happen. They're kinda pricey if you get a pure bred one, and I really don't like buying from breeders anyhow, when so many animals are in shelters.

Yeah, my wife's cat had died and her dad told her he would buy her a new one. Anyone she picked out, they went to a cat show... This was not when we were together. He did get lucky, the one she picked out wasn't show quality without having braces put on it. Yes I found out that braces for cats teeth is a thing. :n00b: And she didn't get breeding rights, had to show proof of getting broken before they would send the registration paperwork.

Wow...just looked them up, they have them weighing in as much as 35 lbs. Wonder if someone had some get loose and breeding. Our 17 lb. house cat made other cats look tiny and the one I killed made ours look small....LOL. I always wondered if it was a cross with a bobcat or something but guess thats not possible. Nice info. This was the color below.

Yeah, they're big cats and their fur makes them look even bigger. There's a few other breeds that get about that size as well. Here is a list of some, my wife was torn between a ragdoll and a maine coon. But fell in love with Spot, yes the cats name was spot well actually Pumpkin spot for the orange dot on its forehead. The sizes are "breed standards" and just like dogs there are some that are above and below that standard. And I'm sure some have gotten loose or been dumped and started breeding.

Around 1980. Socrates the 17 lb cat that chased dogs away. And my old faithful cocker spaniel that Dad got me when I was 7 when my brother went to Vietnam. Best rabbit dog ever, and best friend a kid could have I think. We went and did everything together, she was family and when Dad called me when I was in the Army and said she died I cried for 3 days. She would jump on muskrats, groundhogs and coons and fight to the death until she killed them or I came running to help.....groundhog got her jugular when she was to old to fight and I wasn't there to help. fullsizeoutput_674.jpeg

I had Collies when I was little. They were never trained. I liked them but they were pretty dumb dogs. Later I had a retired guard dog from a warehouse Dad frequented for work. I was afraid of him at first, but he eventually became a member of the family. He'd herd deer in the yard just for fun. Would kill moles. We'd take him hiking and he'd kill snakes too. I think if I ever got another dog I'd want another Shephard or a mix like he was.
