    One last effort since there's seemingly some common ground support for those in harms way, so with all due respect, please provide something to justify the actions in this specific incident that doesn't point to a bad LE shooting;

Known to be New Year's Eve
Shooting into the air on NYE is a known occurrence
    i.e. not officer directed threat
Was not responding to active shooter, not a domestic, not a drunk & disorderly, etc...
    Firearm observed pointed upward
Couldn't pos ID anything behind concealment
    Couldn't ID non threats/bystanders
Couldn't ID beyond threat, his whole frikin family could have been standing behind him

IMO, all these inputs would be processed collectively by a rational thinking person and not led to shots fired, especially by a trained professional. Armchair 1/4 back aside, what's your opinion specific to this case only? Justified?
All due respect, it`s great that you stated it`s just your opinion. None of us were there, we weren`t charged with deciding in an instant whether there was an immediate danger to us, and threat against us. Simply being New Years Eve doesn`t preclude the potential that the gunfire was, or would quickly be directed at the officer. It is a criminal offense to fire a gun into the air inside a city limits, even if it`s New Years Eve. In this instance, the criminal caused his own demise.

Sorry man, can't get behind this. It was a terrible shoot. It wasn't even taking a measured risk to save lives of innocents. It was bad decision making.

On the other hand, when you do stupid things, you open up the opportunity for others to make errors when responding to your stupid thing. That does not excuse the error, but it sure did create the scenario for it to happen.

Perhaps this illegal and dangerous neighborhood tradition should end?

It`s already illegal. What else do you do to end it??????????

    not lost, wandering...
... Demonization of the job, overall job market, a demonization of the government and it's entities overall, all have taken a toll.
Hear so people saying no way they would suggest a career in LE now a days. Hell, I just talked to my nephew when he decided to join the PD. Not that I was specifically trying to talk him out of it, damn proud of him, but just asked are you sure you're going in eyes wide open kind of thing. Wife and young kids, pray he gets to retire some day and isn't shot by friendly fire thru a frickin fence backing up a call.

So is speeding. Perhaps some community education? Some public prosecutions? Ask the news to help?

Or... Just go blazing away through fences. That gets attention too.
Everyone above the age of 12 knows it`s illegal. In this society people are reckless and lawless, and are going to do what they want to do regardless of the law. There are consequences for actions and this Einstein reaped what he sowed. But oh hell yeah, it`s the PC thing to do today, so absolutely persecute law enforcement. Unbelievable.

What is it with Canton, OH police officers? Several years ago we had officer Harless who threatened to execute a CHL holder. Now this. They need some serious retraining in Canton. But I'm sure there are some in this thread who would have supported Harless too.

No bad feelings for the perp here but that LE is not going to get much support. He didnt know how many innocents could have been on the other side of that fence. Could have been surrounded by kids, hostages, who knows. You don't go blasting into the unknown. It will generally not work out in your favor.

Here we see the complete opposite end of the spectrum, a cop who isn't willing to even draw, despite having a gun pointed at him multiple times. He's literally left pleading for his life. The officer is only alive because the perp decided not to shoot him.

According to the video, the officer did draw and fire but missed. About 2:05 or so in the video.
My "armchair" reaction is NOT to second guess the officer, because HE was the one in harms way, HE was the one with rifle-fire going off nearly in his face, and HE was the one who had to determine if his life was in danger.
    .
Absolutely there have been bad police shootings. Happens with some regularity, and I`m all for holding bad people accountable. What I`m not for is those who aren`t in the line of fire and their pious indignation putting it to those who ARE in the line of fire. This society has very rapidly gone to hell. The lawlessness is breathtaking, and I`m supporting those who do the dirty work that keeps us safe.
So you believe that bad police shootings happen with some regularity. How does that mesh with what appears to be your belief that they shouldn't be second guessed? Aren't you second guessing the officers decisions in what you believe to be bad police shootings? Unless of course you were the LEO involved in the bad shootings. Which might explain a few things...

It is not "punishable by death", and it shouldn`t have been, but stop denying the responsibility the Darwin Award winner owned in his demise. If he`s obeying the law, he`s still alive today. Sheesh.
I truly believe you're playing us. Sitting behind that computer with a big grin as you post the most ridiculous answers that could be thought up.

    Funny, bu tnot really.

Maybe the officer should've had a social worker along on the call.

    The officer screwed up, period.
Being behind a fence is no different than being inside the house. Hearing blinded gun fire, isn't just cause to return fire. Would this officer willing fire into a house based on the sound of gun fire?
Not knowing and visually seeing the threat/target, demands simply taking cover to assess the situation. If the guy was shooting at the officer, the fence would have clearly shown the evidence. Bullets tend to "destroy" (see the rules) what they strike.
The officers actions could have had much worse consequences.

Officers are put in harms way each time the clock in, but they are also (or supposed to be) trained for situations just as this.

And... Thank You to all those LEO's that help to protect civilians, and their rights, even when they do stupid s**t.
