Yeah, I *am* a police officer and I *have* been shot at and I *have* shot someone and that's exactly what I'm telling you.

Because I have no idea what's going on behind the fence if I can't see behind the fence. It could be a bad guy shooting at me, it could be another cop shooting a bad guy, it could be a home owner shooting a burglar, it could be an active shooter at a party but there's multiple innocents between me and him.

Now, I don't know the reality of this case. If he could see through the fence or what, but *if* the facts are as presented (which I do not pretend to want to lay odds on) then he's going to have a tough row to hoe going forward on this one.
I was waiting on a resident LEO to chime in. Kinda figured that'd be the take on this with what is known as the moment

"When in doubt, blast it out" has never been a good reason to shoot.

The fact the fence blocks your vision and impairs your ability to assess the situation does not give you the right to use deadly force.

This is mirrored in the Brianna Taylor shooting in Louisville. An officer had already been shot in that situation but the detective who was unable to see and assess the situation shot indiscriminately into the room. Now he is free to pursue a career in either the beverage or food services field...

It is clear the officer had no grasp of the rules of engagement or the expectations placed on him by the department he was serving or the population he was to serve.

If he did feel threatened, then why did he not seek shelter? The fact he did not seek shelter until after he shoots, in itself, shows he had made poor choices up to this point.

If the video released is what the department 'cherry picked' to show the public is the best of the scenario, then they have already thrown up their hands as far as legal defense goes. There is just no way to support this shoot other than the old 'better him than me' and even that lame defense doesn't even pass the giggle test...

Has there EVER been a bad police shooting?
Absolutely there have been bad police shootings. Happens with some regularity, and I`m all for holding bad people accountable. What I`m not for is those who aren`t in the line of fire and their pious indignation putting it to those who ARE in the line of fire. This society has very rapidly gone to hell. The lawlessness is breathtaking, and I`m supporting those who do the dirty work that keeps us safe.

I would be curious as to how much experience the LEO had.

As LEOs have been demonized over recent years, particularly by the burn, loot, murder folks and candy *** prosecutors, it has to be increasingly difficult to attract competent people to the job.

I wonder if standards are being lowered such that some are now recruited when they would have been rejected a few years ago.

Here we see the complete opposite end of the spectrum, a cop who isn't willing to even draw, despite having a gun pointed at him multiple times. He's literally left pleading for his life. The officer is only alive because the perp decided not to shoot him.

The only thing I would say may need adjustment is the comparison to a few years ago as opposed to, say, 5 or so. Standards have been slipping for awhile as fewer and fewer applicants are simultaneously qualified and interested. Demonization of the job, overall job market, a demonization of the government and it's entities overall, all have taken a toll.

Fortunately, I have personally seen the unqualified still get bounced quickly. Spots may be open, but that’s better than keeping around liabilities.

It`s funny how so many armchair quarterbacks like to blast someone for split-second decisions they make in the heat of the moment, while they`re safe and completely removed from that high-stress situation. You ought to be in law enforcement since you have it all figured out.
So on NYE, when it's well known that this happens, and you get a call for shots fired, is the most likely thing that someone is walking around slaughtering people in the backyard at a family gathering?

    not lost, wandering...
You`re certainty entitled to that opinion.
    One last effort since there's seemingly some common ground support for those in harms way, so with all due respect, please provide something to justify the actions in this specific incident that doesn't point to a bad LE shooting;

Known to be New Year's Eve
Shooting into the air on NYE is a known occurrence
    i.e. not officer directed threat
Was not responding to active shooter, not a domestic, not a drunk & disorderly, etc...
    Firearm observed pointed upward
Couldn't pos ID anything behind concealment
    Couldn't ID non threats/bystanders
Couldn't ID beyond threat, his whole frikin family could have been standing behind him

IMO, all these inputs would be processed collectively by a rational thinking person and not led to shots fired, especially by a trained professional. Armchair 1/4 back aside, what's your opinion specific to this case only? Justified?
