Bullspit. Show me the government programs that pay able-bodied adults a living wage on a permanent basis as an alternative to working.
Where are these people that are refusing to work for Domino's, Family Dollar, Hardee's, etc. working if they're not working for them? I mean, employment must be at near 100%, right? Where do you think those people are getting their "living wage" from? Puh-leeze. I mean golly... I guess they all just decided to become doctors and lawyers or something and that's why pizza places can't find delivery drivers.

I read today that the Federal unemployment benefits extension expires in September. Until then, few people are going to get off their dead a**es and got back to work. Governors of Montana and South Carolina announced that they will withdraw from this program in June. Let's hope other states follow suite.

Sen. Sherrod Brown D-OH was interviewed on MSNBC and asked about the Federal unemployment benefit encouraging people not to work. He replied that maybe employers should pay more so that this won't be an incentive. Typical leftist thinking. The Government is artificially propping up wages with this crap.

You are the one adding the Permanent Basis into the equation.

That's still barely enough to cover an apartment.

Where are they getting the rest of the money for food, car payments, insurance, etc? I don't think that's enough to keep someone from working.

And social security was supposed to be for people to retire on and exit the job market, but then they decided they'd take on all those $7 an hour jobs because it pays low enough that they don't lose their social security. And as those people age and die, employers are left wondering why there's no one willing to do it for $7 left.
Well man, I don't know what to tell you. Be a good humanitarian, open a business and pay everyone $60K to start with full pension, 401K's, full medical insurance, etc.. Let me know how long your business lasts. Save the country! You can do it, I'm sure...

Enjoy your $15.00 Big Macs.
They don't have Big Macs, but a BBQ beef brisket at the Costco Food court is $4.99, and a whole pizza is $9.99. Some locations have a $4.99 cheeseburger.

The food service worker wage at Costco? $14.92 an hour.

The average wage of a McDonald's crew member in Australia is $18 an hour. Big Mac price? $6.45.

    Enjoy being wrong. :):

Those jobs aren't supposed to be jobs to cover apartment or raise a family. They are called entry level jobs for a reason.

You do realize, those are the only options available for quite a large number of the population, right? This isn't the 70s anymore, most of those good paying able-to-retire-at jobs are in china now.

Where in the world did you get the idea that we, as a society, are supposed to provide everyone with a salary high enough to provide for all their wants and needs? Like I said, there are a LOT more Socialists on INGO than I had ever imagined.

Then why are so many boomers complaining about kids never leaving home when the only employment opportunities aren't supposed to allow them to leave the nest?

I was in Australia in 2000. A carton of cigarettes was $75.00 even back then. Enjoy being broke.

If you smoke, you deserve to pay $75 for a carton. Sort of an idiot tax. Maybe help defray the cost of your inevitable lung cancer treatments from our wonderful, affordable healthcare system.

Wages vs the cost of items are still more reasonable in australia than they are here. Sure stuff is more expensive, because their dollar is worth about $70 cents.

But their minimum wage is somewhere between $28-32 an hour depending on where, while the cost of items really isn't much different than here anymore. Cigarettes have always been much more expensive outside of the US, except in japan. They tax the hell out of them in most of the west.

When I left home (at 18), minimum wage was less than $4/hr.. Somehow I made it without ever going on government assistance. How? By living in cheap places, with a room mate, working multiple jobs, eventually going back to school and getting a job that paid more. What else ya got?

Maybe that's a sign of a problem with something else if a large number of the population is only qualified to work fast food or stock the dollar store.

Maybe just maybe they should remain low paying to create an environment where people look to move on and gain skills that make them able to earn more money.

I guess they remained in business for decades with a constant turn over of highschool kids every summer, but I can't quite put my finger on what's different right now.

    :dunno:

And what year might this have been? I'd wager than $4 would go far further than $10 would today.
